Jakumo:
In George Orwell's classic novel "Animal Farm", a group of pigs being reared on a farm, decided to overthrow the "government", by forcibly taking control of the farm from the farmer. Other long-suffering farm animals were initially very supportive of the regime change agenda that was planned and then successfully executed by a resourceful and brave group of pigs.

The early celebration and euphoria of the farm animals quickly turned to dismay, however, when the pigs, now running the farm, proceeded to behave like ALL dictators do shortly after grabbing political power, by arrogating sweeping political powers to themselves, whilst repressing free speech and public dissent to the new regime.

The plot-line of Animal Farm is now playing out in Sudan, now that the genocidal dictator Omar Bashir has been deposed. Rather than call for immediate national elections that will give Sudan its first democratically chosen government in 30 years, the army generals who today seized power in Sudan have announced that they will remain in power for two YEARS, during which the usual looting of state treasuries is bound to be perpetrated by the men in military uniform, in a predictable scenario that is sadly familiar to many African nations, including Nigeria.

When it eventually dawns on the common Sudanese men and women, who flooded the streets in protest against the regime of the departing tyrant, that they have only succeeded in replacing one dictator with another possibly more violent despot, the entire nation of Sudan will already be under the iron grip of martial law, worsened by the inevitable international trade sanctions that will follow in response to this coup.
You have it exactly right! One would think Nigerians, of all people, would know better than to think any group of self-appointed leaders in uniform could possibly be less corrupt or unaccountable than the civilians they replace. The insistence on a 2-year "transitional" program comes directly from the Babangida and al-Sisi playbook, and like our Maradona, I'm sure that towards the end of that period this junta will find a new set of excuses to move the goalposts further into the future, later repeating the trick yet again with some new ruse, ad infinitum; meanwhile they will feast on the public purse so brazenly the masses will turn nostalgic for the "good old days" of Bashir, forgetting all the reasons why they wanted him gone in the first place.

Anyone trusting in the good intentions of military men who interfere in politics is a f.ool. If the Sudanese masses have any sense, they will intensify their protests and civil disobedience until these coup-plotters announce concrete, immediate steps to hand over to a civilian caretaker government.

The Queen of England is a ceremonial leader.

jokpeme1:
Omar al-Bashir, Sudanese President for 30 years until Wednesday, has been arrested, Defence Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf has confirmed.

Addressing the Sudanese people on Thursday afternoon, Ibn Auf said al-Bashir, who is wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court (CC), had been “taken into custody in a safe place”.

He also announced a state of emergency for three months and a transitional period of two years, as well as a national c ;Deasefire and the immediate release of all political prisoners.

"Despite all the suffering, despite all the lies, despite all the false promises, the Sudanese were patient, the Sudanese were tolerant, the Sudanese were generous," he said.
Ibn Auf also praised the youth of Sudan for "taking to the streets in a very peaceful way”.

The demonstrations started in late December by university students angered by the tripling of the cost of bread.

When the ATMs ran out of cash shortly after, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) an umbrella group of doctors, lawyers and other activists, redirected the protests to call for the end of al-Bashir’s reign. The movement has since spread to nearly every state in Sudan, making it the biggest ever resistance effort against the government since al-Bashir became President in 1989.

As the number of protesters multiplied, state-led security forces cracked down on the civilians, firing tear gas during rallies, beating demonstrators in the streets, arresting them indiscriminately, and sometimes killing them. More than 65 people have died since the protests began.

While al-Bashir’s ouster continues to be celebrated, Sudanese activists have rejected Ibn Auf’s announcement of a two-year military council to oversee a transition of power. Instead, the activists are demanding the handover of power to a civilian government.

"This is a game on the Sudanese people, the street refuses totally the announcement by Ibn Auf," activist Omar Al-Neel said following the Defence Minister's televised address to the nation. "All of the Sudanese people are in the street and demanding the downfall of all the regime and not recycling the same people."

The SPA has called on citizens across the capital and regions around the country to converge on the army headquarters for more protests.

“The regime has conducted a military coup to reproduce the same faces and entities that our great people have revolted against,” the SPA said in a statement.

A former military commander, al-Bashir came into power after leading a bloodless coup in 1989. The ICC charged the 75-year-old in 2009 and 2010 with crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide in Darfur, where between 200,000 and 300,000 people were killed and at least 2.7 million others were displaced.

Despite the international travel ban stemming from his arrest warrant, al-Bashir has made diplomatic trips to South Africa, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

More than half of Nigerians voted for him the same way , more than half of Sudanese citizens voted for Omar Albashir and today they are calling for his head. Power is a dangerous tool in the hands of bigots and nepotistic fellas . So I hope our leaders learn a lesson from the rise and fall of Omar Albashir.

This won't end well.

The prime problem is the cut in the quantity of crude oil going to Sudan after the secession by South Sudan. This has been worsened by the low crude oil prices.

This has cut government revenues by more than 50% and this knocked the sails out of Sudan's economy.

Inflation has been high due to the plunge in the real value of the Sudanese currency. The government has also introduced some very unpopular austerity measures.

If the Sudanese people expect a revolution and a new government that will usher in prosperity and surplus, they are mistaken.

They will be disappointed. The money just isn't there! To get the economy back on track will take painful economic medicine that will be hard to swallow, the sort the IMF will recommend and approve.

It's delusional to think that such a drastic drop in money entering the coffers of the state won't come with painful consequences.

Actually the military had been protecting him, and at a point the demonstrations were channelled at the Army.
Thousands of people had thronged the military headquarters for some time now.
I am actually surprised, they decided to take him down. I guess it could well be that he resigned.

Thanks for this write up. I actually wrote about the coup expressing pessimism from my own perspective.

Your perspective is also correct. The best outcome from the coup plotters is the sort that happened in Nigeria in 1998 when Abdulsalaam and his boys disposed of Abacha and assumed power.

Though they successful brought about a transition to democracy within a year, they looted the country blind. They were probably the most corrupt government ever, even touching the foreign reserves and depleting it.

The police headquarters in Abuja was built within a year for 14billion. I can tell you with certainty that that building could have been built then for no more than 1billion.

I'm eating popcorn and watching how this movie ends. Care for some?

Someone thinks Nigerians should take note of the Sudan story and demonstrate till Buhari is removed. Unfortunately, none of all that happened in the Arab spring and happened in Sudan can happen in Nigeria.
1. Nigerians are too divided across religious and ethnic lines. In Sudan people were taking shifts in the demonstration, and people would bring food and water for the demonstrators.
2. The average Nigerian is corrupt, that exactly is why there is no killing of corruption in Nigeria. We know the stories that surrounded the "Our Mumu Don Do" movement.
3. Nigerians are grossly selfish. No one is his brother's keeper. Those who are minimally comfortable will not risk demonstrating when they can at least manage, no questions asked about that neighbor who is a messenger in civil service and barely goes home with 20,000, but has a family.
