9jaRealist: Here we go again. Nobody is denying the fact that iron mesh is not used in other parts of the world. Most times, it is used in low density areas and not in a high urban centers where traffic - both human and vehicular are much. The picture you posted showed were they were used in an express way and low density area. See how scanty the area in the picture you posted looks. Compare it to Lagos, where population density is high, with street hawkers everywhere and unruly commercial bus drivers. You need to up your game and ensure that whatever material you are using in those areas could withstand human interference. These are all factored in engineering process. See another express with wrought iron 1 Like

Originalsly: Traffic on these roads function better and safer with the fencing than without... It’s not a perfect (even ideal) solution but it is pragmatic and BETTER - and perfection should never be the enemy of better. Meanwhile, if you have actually been on these roads you realize that they have BOTH pedestrian bridges and traffic lights (and/or even LASTMA traffic police/wardens). The idea of these fences is to compel Nigerians to use PROPER road furniture (lights, crossings and/or walkways, etc.), because it sadly appears that many Nigerian adults have to be literally forced to do even the most basic things correctly. 2 Likes |

Beedude:Er...the only difference is the color. The material itself (wire mesh) is exactly the same! |

Focusmind: Dude, that thing is primarily DECORATIVE, and you put it on Lagos roads people will simply jump over it. If only Nigerians are willing to try what apparently is a novelty to them of obeying basic (and quite often rather simple) rules and regulations, rather than constantly trying to be “sharp” (while labeling others “Dundee”) and to game the system, only to then turn around and wonder why they are surrounded by chaos and nothing ever seems to work. Or why their rulers effectively imbibe the same culture of lawlessness. SMH |

The Danfo drivers are the number one culprits, followed by the truck drivers with failed break. When a truck loses its break and run into rbe median, the Danfo turns the space created to traffic escape routes .I sincerely hope that the incoming Governor will repair the broken medians and enforce the traffic rule. Indeed, it will be excellent if the Lagos State Government can introduce Uniform and Identity Card for the drivers and their Conductors, provide a platform for commutters to report wreckless Drivers and Conductors as well as instilling sanctions that will suspend operating licences for driver and conductors that are guilty of public fighting, molestations of commutters, use of alcohol and driving under such influence, dirty appearance, parking abd loading on the express like Ketu-Ojota axis by the BRT Bus stop etc Strict regulations that will also police the activities of the traffic enforcement officers like LASTMA and Police, such that all will be afraid to flaut the law. 1 Like |

Focusmind: Sadly for you and your unnecessary and illogical argument and justification for lawlessness and unruly behaviour, there are pedestrian crossways and bridges in nearly all the pictures posted and in the above picture right next to lazy and lawless people still endangering themselves instead of using the pedestrian bridge just a few meters away from them. Even if the put 10 pedestrian bridges in front of your house/door, I bet you still won't use it. Some people are just lazy, lawless, anti-social and unruly. The government is not the problem, you are the problem. |

9jaRealist:Oh? So where are the people? We are looking at the boundary of two separate functional towns with a road separating both. People can transact their full business on either side of the road. The road does not divide their town and they don't need to cross it. Amenities are provided on either side. The road was put there first. Both towns expanded from their city centres outwards. The houses at the edge are the cheapest houses on the cheapest land because of vehicle noise from the roads. The fence protects children living in these areas from venturing to the road. In UK, I saw fences along the railway line. They were placed specifically to prevent people trying to commit suicide. The point remains that Western nations do not build 10 lane roads in the middle of town, put fences on them and expect people not to cross the roads or damage the fences in the process of trying to do so. Don't just be in UK or US vexing for Nigerians. You have to study the people and their history. Then you will understand why certain things appear the way they do. 1 Like |

uuzba: Sorry but you keep missing the forest for the trees. Proper planning is to build for YOUR population and it peculiar lifestyles, not just simply to copy-and-paste from "the UK" or "Europe" (when even with both there are as much peculiarities as commonalities among their constituent units and infrastructure). Again, population centers in Nigeria typically germinate around roadways, highways, rivers, and/or markets. Accordingly, these highways that you erroneously argue were "built in the middle of town" were actually not (and our parents/grandparents will testify that when highways like the Badagry or the Lagos-Ibadan expressways or even the Lekki expressway were built these areas were very sparsely populated and not built up). Given that Nigeria's REALITY (not the UK's or Europe's) is that despite building highways out in the middle of nowhere (Lekki was essentially swamp wasteland when the Lekki Expressway was built over 35 years ago), populations will invariably migrate/gravitate around these highways/roadways, good governance is to adopt the most pragmatic measures to manage/ameliorate any issues arising therefrom. In this case, fencing have been used and has proved reasonably effective - until the apparently recent spate of vandalization, which unfortunately appears seems to be garnering the commendation rather than condemnation of some Nairalanders. |

uuzba: The IRONY! Meanwhile, since Ambode did NOT personally build these "10 lane roads in the middle of town" (the most 'recent' in Lekki being over 35 years ago), should he therefore not do anything to alleviate the situation? Or should he instead evict the population and demolish their property? |

Cityfirstborn: I HAVE TOLD YOU PEOPLE: STOP EQUATING WHAT HAPPENS IN NIGERIA WITH ''THE BLACK MAN''. This is Kigali, Rwanda. It is run by black men. You will struggle to find a single grain of sand on the road. Rwanda is just recovering from a terrible civil war. They are not alone in Africa. There are other places on the continent equally as clean and well maintained, and they are run by black people. STOP EQUATING WHAT HAPPENS IN NIGERIA WITH ''THE BLACK MAN''. A few pics of Kigali: I mean, this place is cleaner than many European and Asian capitals. The public facilities are maintained with uncanny perfection. Black men are running the place. Leave black men alone please. Face your country. 1 Like |

Rosskii: Rwanda is the exception, not the rule when OVER 80% behave in a certain way, that behaviour become associated with that set of people. Even black dominated areas in western and oriental countries are MOSTLY run down so what are you saying? |
