we are very highly indiscipline people, even during War Against indiscipline(WAI) we still beats indiscipline to it.Ambode has done its bits posterity will judge him
.May we know why ALL NIGERIANS use block to fence our houses? Is it not because we have a lot to hide? Do you know that the cost of Fences we made is so ridiculous that we can use such money tied down to build half of Nigerian Nation? Consider this and you will be shocked that something definitely is wrong with us-we are either stealing from someone pot or we all have cornered substantial National Cake we are hidden.yet we want to go to London,America, Canada and China then we become gentleman by obeying our masters laws.Shame .

Problem Number 1.

The fact that destructive, criminal and unpatriotic elements destroyed public infrastructures doesn't mean the government shouldn't perform their repair and maintenance duties.

Governments in Nigeria spends wealth and treasure erecting and commissioning infrastructures and quickly abandon the infrastructures permanently, they think it's no longer their business and they are not obligated to repair and maintain.

Problem Number 2.

Unruly, lawless, destructive and unpatriotic citizenry. They shout and yell over governmental incompetence, corruption, and other societal ills, but they are actually responsible for the same problems they shout, cry and rail against every day.

We are too lawless and destructive to sanely and patriotically to function in a stable, vibrant and progressive society, it's just not part of our make up as a people.

This country is not going anywhere until the citizenry/We adjust our ways and attitude.

if laws are tough, punishment is heavy and the culture of maintenance is sustained this issues won't come up, fashola did a pretty good job on those area, during his era cut one flower and pay 5k or more, cross or pee on the road side and get arrested, if u dear wear bathroom slippers while walking on the road you are in trouble if sanwo Olu could follow his foot steps he would be successful fare well to ambode the man really tried

Unfortunately this has nothing to do with maintenance, tbis is intentional destruction by hoodlums to create path for their evil doings which is different from gradual degradation.

AutoJosh leave matter. Our standards are just too low in this country. This kind of thing is done using wrought iron. Go to Europe and see how wrought iron that have stayed for centuries were used for road division and this type of work as shown in the picture below

Here, we use one fake gauze iron for things like this, despite the fact that the disorder in this country is second to none. Check some of the flower lanes and bus tops where these fake and sub-standard wire gauze were used, they have all spoilt. For you to build things that will last, use superior material.

The LASG cannot say the destruction of these fences came as a surprise.

It is clear this was a contract awarded to favour some one - with built-in opportunities for renewal - all in line with the system of patronage that defines Lagos.

What a wasted opportunity.

Inferior fence to start with. Though we lack maintenance culture both the citizens and govt. I saw some of these fences in Dubai and I know those that did the work in Lagos just use it to syphon money. How can an iron fence be destroyed in less than 4 years when it wasn't hit by a Truck, Lorry, Tata bus, or Bulldozer. I weep for this nation

Public maintenance issues may well be a part of it (albeit the Lagos Public Works Corporation continually maintains public fixtures, and even have a hotline for same), but to be brutally honest it is more the manifestation of prioritizing physical infrastructure over social infrastructure (primarily EDUCATION). The result is that even relatively progressive-thinking governments like Lagos’ is often effectively left struggling to build a 21st Century city for a population in which large segments thereof are still imbued with 19th Century (or earlier) personal habits, worldview, mindset and beliefs. For instance, in Lagos, it is not unusual to see people openly taking a leak (in extreme cases, even defecating) right in front of the admittedly few public toilets or dashing across highways right underneath overhead walkways.

Accordingly, until and unless we begin to more massively and meaningfully invest in people (primarily in EDUCATION but also in healt and such other indices of Human Capital Development), we’ll just stay running in place - or, worse, keep sliding backwards!

and a nation too with a destructive nature.
Nigeria is a project.
Everyone was living in their villages, minding their village business. Then some people sold us the idea of Nigeria. Everyone doing business from town to town, speaking English the national language and owning property anywhere within the region, Nigeria with one currency, Naira.
This benefits came along with Nation building which was set up in school curriculum. Learn and sing the National Anthem and Pledge. Subject yourself to the government of the land.
-
Somewhere along the line, someone has messed up the plan.
We now have different village people mixed up in the cities, fighting and killing each other everyday and destroying government property.
We need reeducation.

There’s NOTHING “inferior” about them...
These are basic WIRE MESH used worldwide. If someone wants to do fanciful fencing, that’s their kpalanga but should be not our priority.

I lived in UK once and visited a few other European countries. They don't have fences on their roads. And people don't cross the roads. Why?
They don't build 10 lane expressway in residential areas as we have done. Their expressway is out of town. There's no houses there. So nobody has to cross it.
Inside the town, where the houses are, they have small dual carriage roads with traffic lights and zebra crossings. EXACTLY AS LAGOS ISLAND.
It's called panning.

Now in America, their roads are bigger. But almost everyone has a car. They buy cars using monthly payment schemes. You don't have to save complete money for car. Just pay minimum monthly sum over 2, 3, 4 years and the car is yours to use NOW.
If you have car, what are you doing crossing road?
It's called planning.

Wire mesh fencing is used on roadways all over the world...
Let's quit effectively giving comfort to wrongdoers/lawbreakers by implying that the fault lies elsewhere.

Excellent pictures.
NOW, can you see any residential houses and market nearby? Where are the pedestrians?
NONE.
Wire mesh is used in the non residential areas. No market, no school, nothing to attract pedestrians.

Our own is upside down. 10 lane road right in the middle of residential area. How won't people cross the road everyday and break the fence?

I was going to respond by starting off on your wrong presumptions about the UK (even just driving in from Heathrow, there are miles of cement fencing separating residential estates from the motorway. Nonetheless, I do not want to unnecessarily quibble about minor details and consequently lose the forest for the trees. Accordingly, I am glad that you yourself noted the DIFFERENCES between roadways in the UK and the US, the lesson being that you build for YOUR population and their peculiar lifestyles (within reason of course). Thus, if fencing is necessary to save Nigerians form their own self-destructive personal habits, or because in Nigeria population tend to gravitate towards and/or form around highways and roadways, then PROPER PLANNING would require it. It is NOT one-size-fits-all!

Everybody was chilling in their villages before minding their humble business. But city people will not allow them hear word. Now they all rushed to the city and the city people cannot employ them. Why did you do shakara for them in the first place? They are here now and will mess up the whole place and will never go back to their villages.

Exactly! Because a “good person” would never have built pedestrian bridges, walkways and fence off highways to protect pedestrians from being run over against apparently their own wishes to be run over. Dude, you can drag a horse to the stream but you cannot force it to drink.

In the '60, Oshodi area in Lagos was empty. The government was just building the expressway then. And they cleared off some "village" lands there. My dad lost a "village" plot he purchased there.
After the road was built, they didn't stop people from going back there and building houses all over the place.
The Government didn't do it's duty. And never seems to do it. They just open the back door and collect bribe from individuals who end up building markets all over ther road and hawking gala right on the road.
It's not fence that will solve the problem.

We all know if government tries to forcefully evict people or otherwise impose planning laws in Nigeria, all hell will break loose...
Our communities naturally/organically aggregate around markets, roadways or highways, and thus we should accommodate same within reason.

I'm not surprised. I blame the planners. Why would they have mountainous overhead bridges in high pedestrian traffic areas? Did they consider people with load?... the aged? Can some supporters of these costly inconveniences explain to me why traffic lights were not placed to regulate the flow of both pedestrian and vehicle traffic? Not against the fence... but I'm against the ridge in this 21st century... maybe a good idea 1940/1950.... that's not at all progressive in these times.
