What happens if you fuel a car without first turning off the engine?

Almost every single time - nothing. You fill up your car with gasoline, hang up the hose, put your gas cap on and drive away.

But, there is always that one time for that one guy or gal when the car goes up in flames because a spark, whether from the exhaust or not, gets to the vapors of the gasoline and starts a fire.

Since it doesn’t cost you anything to shut off your car and start it again, just do it. It’s worth that extra .0001% of safety.

On top of that, you won’t get your car jacked because you left the keys in the ignition with the car running.

Getting your car jacked by leaving it running at the gas pump is more likely than the gas starting on fire, but you can save yourself the trouble of both by turning the car off and taking the keys with you.
