I definitely DO NOT support a mandated two party system. that's cheap ticket to tyranny.
what happened to democracy. If we don't like either party why shouldn't a third party be able to spring up?

if these "experts" are looking at the US because of the unofficial two party system here (i hope they're not), then they're fooling themselves.

Our experts should instead find a way to make the parties that exist more legit. many of the lesser parties in Nigeria that share common ideologies should merge so they can compete with the big ones.

That is just the problem, our politicians are not matured enough nor have enough morals to coalesce into one single or maybe a couple of formidable opposition parties. As long as they think they can get easy money from the government by starting unviable visionless parties, every Sule, Bode, and Chuks will start his own useless party.

What this then comes to, is to legislate a plural or tripartite State which will also discourage party affiliations based on ethnicity.

1) How will these tiny parties "make easy money from the government" when they can't win any elections?
2) What miracle will cause these 'visionless' politicians to suddenly become 'visionful' in a two party system?

two party system is a very good idea. then we would have clear cut ideologies to drive the vision of whoever is the president.

it will help check rigging because both parties will have people and structures on ground, in equal strength. it will discourage policians like tinubu et al who maintain thugs and other miscreants on a payroll, solely for the rigging of election.

the screening process is also made easier because the parties would have done a lot of work internally, over the years leading up to the election, to sieve out the jokers and thieves. this ensures that tainted people (such as atiku, odili, etc ) do not offer themselves up for service.

one of the reasons why ibb was able to successfully organise his show in '93 was cos of the two party system.

what we have currently in operation is a situation where politicians form parties off-the-cuff just so they can access the spoils of power. they dont have any ideological basis at all, so you cant actually score thier performance after they leave offie. they just go their to steal and award spurious contracts

Two-party system does not have a defination in democracy. Democracy allows the sane and insane to operate side by side.

A post since 2007 posted by the big masquerade himself.

But an educative read.

Meanwhile, while it's true that a two party system will limit options, which impedes Democratic tenets, I also think there's got be limit to the madness we today as number of political parties keep skyrocketing.

The past election with over 70 presidential candidate while we only knew about five can only be best described as a joke.

There's got to be yardstick be a party qualifies to be registered.
