Serious doubt has continued to envelope the political camp of former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, as he attempts to actualise his ambition of contesting the 2011 presidential election, SUNDAY PUNCH has gathered.

Our correspondent gathered on Friday that the camp was in a dilemma because the recent happenings in the Peoples Democratic Party were unexpected and had changed its political calculations of delivering the former military president as the party‘s candidate against all odds.

It was learnt that stakeholders including influential PDP governors whom Babaginda had relied on to help him actualise his ambition were gradually toeing a different path.

More worrisome to the camp, our correspondent gathered, was the discovery that many northern governors who were formerly against the ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan, were at the verge of sealing a new agreement with the Jonathan camp.

Our correspondent gathered that the anti-Jonathan governors were afraid of losing out completely if against their wish Jonathan emerged as the party‘s standard bearer especially as Babangida has remained unpopular.

There were also fears that with the moves adopted by Jonathan‘s camp to woo all the governors for their support, Babangida did not stand a chance of winning the party‘s primaries.

The camp was said to be further unsettled following reports that the 28 PDP governors had contributed the about N11m to purchase the presidential nomination form for Jonathan.

Therefore, the Babangida‘s camp was said to be considering moving its political structure to another party.

Observing that the PDP might frustrate the ambition of their boss, it was gathered that the camp had started talking to the former military dictator on the need to defect to another party.

Though, Babangida, it was learnt, still believed that he would actualise his aspiration in PDP, the camp was afraid that other political parties like the All Nigerian Peoples Party, the Action Congress of Nigeria and the Labour Party, might not allow Babangida to fly their flags.

When contacted, the Director, Media and Communications, IBB 2011 Presidential Campaigns Organisation, Mr. Kassim Afegbua, said the Babangida’s camp was undisturbed despite all the reported manoeuvering.

According to him, IBB will continue to remain in PDP whether he loses or wins, adding that there was no time the camp contemplated shifting its structure to another party.

Though I know very well that I stand to make nothing less than N100 million in an IBB fours in Aso Rock if he becomes the president come 2011 but the truth of the matter is that Goodluck Jonathan is a better candidate and will favor Nigerians more! Right now, I am still thinking about my personal interest first!
