Nitrogen (N ) deficiency: Nitrogen is needed for growth and development. Nitrogen deficiency syndrome occurs more in localized areas water logged soil due to inadequate drainage, acid soils and dry areas with acute shortage of available soil nitrogen. It can also be induced if other elements such as potassium are present in relative excess.
Symptoms: poor growth and development, bright yellowing of leaflets and tissue of Midrib with narrow and curling laminas.
Control; deficiency symptoms can be corrected with recommended application of 0.5kg, 1kg and 1.5 kg of sulphate of ammonia in the first three years after planting. Where deficiency is associated with water logging, drainage should be improved.

The are 3 major varieties of oil palm in Nigeria:

1 the mother palm of a hybrid is called dura. Dura fruits have a thick shell, it has 80 to 90% kernel, 10 to 20% shell ( flesh).

2 the father palm of a hybrid is called pisifera, pisifera fruits have no shell at all.

3 The cross between Dura and pisifera palms is a hybrid called Tenera.
