Doing jury service You must do jury service when you’re sent a jury summons form, unless you’re allowed to delay it. You can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not return the form or turn up for your jury service. The jury service will be as close as possible to where you live. The court will not pay you to do jury service. You can watch a video about jury service. There’s also a Welsh language version of the video. When you’re not allowed to do jury service In some circumstances you cannot be on a jury, for example if you’ve been in prison in the last 10 years. These are listed in the guide to jury summons which is sent to you with the form. How long jury service lasts Jury service usually lasts up to 10 working days but can be longer. You may be on a jury for more than one trial during your service. |

How to claim expenses Make your claim for expenses at the end of your jury service - and no more than 12 months after your jury service started. You’ll usually be paid 7 to 10 working days after submitting your claim form. If the trial’s likely to last a long time (for example, several months) the court can make special arrangements for payment. Fill in the claim form in the jury pack you were given at the start of jury service. Return it to the court with all relevant receipts. You should also include: a Certificate of Loss of Earnings if you’re working or on benefits (completed by your employer or benefits office) evidence of loss of earnings if you’re self-employed, such as your most recent tax return evidence of any other expenses - including childcare expenses Childcare expenses The person looking after your child must fill in the childcare form in your jury pack. If you’re using a registered childminder, they must include their number on the form. Return the childcare form to the court - you must also show the court the child’s passport or birth certificate. If a family member or friend is looking after your children, they must write a letter saying how many hours they’ve cared for your children. |

Delaying or being excused from jury service You may be able to delay (‘defer’) jury service, for example if: you’ve already booked a holiday you’re having an operation your employer will not give you time off work You can only defer jury service once. How to defer Write explaining why you want to defer. Include evidence showing that you’ll not be available, for example: proof that you’ve booked a holiday a letter from your doctor a letter from your employer explaining why they’ll not give you time off You must also list the dates when you’ll be available in the 12 months after you were supposed to start jury duty. |
