Hi everyone, thanks for all your advice on the above quote. I decided to go for my interview the next day even without the SEVIS receipt. I hope this narration and the transcript below will assist someone with this type of issue. Also, if you have paid your sevis through check or money order and it hasn't reflected on the website before your interview date and you are unable to cancel/reschedule, just go for the interview like that. They won't refuse you at the entrance if you explain that you have paid but its not showing yet. OK..enough of the long story, here is the transcript..(the interview was quite short)
VO: Pass me your passport please..... Me: (I pass my passport) VO: where are you heading to? Me: I'll be heading to the University of Utah, for Doctorate studies in Biochemistry VO: Can I see your I-20 Me: Yes please (Pass I-20) VO: How will you fund your studies Me: Graduate fellowship VO: OK..so did you take like the GMAT..GRE? Me: I took the GRE and TOEFL VO: So what will you be doing?...Teaching?.. Me: Mostly Lab work, however, I have a compulsory semester of teaching. VO: Do you have a supervisor yet? Me: Not yet, though I have someone in mind but the program allows 1st yr PhD students to carryout 3lab rotations where they can get to know prospective supervisors before they go into full agreement or choose their supervisor.. VO:..OK..so have you paid your SEVIS.. MEI was a bit carried away)....NO....ow sorry, I have paid for SEVIS, but its yet to reflect on the website so I can't print a receipt...I paid on the X of July...ow sorry twas on the X of June VO: OK..give me a minute let me check the other platform if its showing there.....So its not showing yet...but it would eventually show..so what we would do is...you'll check online from now till Friday and when its showing, print the receipt and take your passport to any of the DHL offices in this white slip...you do not need to come back to the consulate....we'll issue the visa when we get your receipt and passport. Do you understand?? Me: Yes I do. Thank you! ....and as I got home in the evening, the SEVIS payment confirmation mail came in.. I have collected my stamped passport back...Thanks for the advise guys. Congrats 1 Like |

Okay so here is what I think. First of all, I think you did a good job on your transcript generally. But the following in bold and coloured are what I think Like I always say, these are my personal opinions... and my comments are open to more scrutiny and questions and disagreements. I do not speak from a place of authority. Just giving a few ideas on what I think. How did you know about the school? Through personal research using online resources such as Google as well as visiting the school website for further information. (and taking my academic profile into consideration…. I think this statement is vague and may lead to more questioning)Why this school over MTU? NMSU's program aligns more with my interest due to its multidisciplinary approach to analyzing environmental/public health issues as reflected in its course requirements. Also, the admission from MTU is without funding while NMSU gave me an assistantship which covers the full tuition and part of the living expenses. When did you graduate? 2017. (I do not think you need to qualify when in 2017 with late. Either give a precise month or just the year)What have you been doing since then? I went for the compulsory one year national service which I finished March this year. Since then I have been working as a research assistant with one of my former lecturers during my undergraduate studies, Dr ****. My role is to carry out environmental audit on Telecommunication Base Station (TBS) sites, in order to access the effect of emissions from each site on the surrounding locality. (Also were you actually working or volunteering? Is it a paid employment?)Tell me your study plans Throughout the program, I will be taking courses with a minimum of 42 credit units in total. It also includes a field experience, at the end of the second semester, which will fortify me with the ability to apply classroom learning to real world problems and solutions. Some of the courses I will be taking are Environmental Public Health Issues, Biostatistical Applications in Public Health, and Evaluative Approaches in Public Health. ( I think this should read like… My program will cover a minimum of 42 credit units in total. Courses will include Environmental Public Health Issues, Biostatistical Applications in Public Health, and Evaluative Approaches in Public Health). What will this program do for you/what are your plans after graduation? By the end of the program, I would have acquired the necessary skills needed to critically analyze environmental health risks and proffer solution to same, thus enabling me to take up a job, as an environmental health specialist, with the Environmental Quality Control unit of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) L, back here in Nigeria. (This program will equip me with skills to take up a job as an environmental health specialist and be able to use such skills in analyzing environmental health risks present in Nigeria today such as…..)What does he do? He works with the Lagos State Government where he heads the *** unit of **** LGA. He also has his own personal business. ( this personal business part is iffy… I do not know how legal it is to work for the government and be running a business on the side. 2. I also do not want you to shoot yourself in the foot cos this is a leading question which may lead to what kind of business etc)Why would your uncle want to sponsor you? He also had his masters abroad, in the UK, and has since returned to make an impact in the country. This strengthens his support of my plan to study overseas to enhance my career and he has been sponsoring me even long before now. (My uncle studied abroad, and his experience strengthened his support of my study abroad plans)
Tohajan: Good day everyone. Kindly help scrutinize my Proposed Interview Transcript.
@fairheart, @AgreatMan, @Predstan, @Shawarma, @dreambound and EVERYONE pls.
Your observations (constructive or otherwise) are highly welcome pls.
MY PROFILE CGPA - 4.40/5.00 GRE - 308 (Q-153, V-155), AWA: 3.0 TOEFL - 98 Deficit after assistantship - less than $10k

VO: How many admits
Me: WashU (Olin) and USC
VO: So why did you choose this school

VO: why do you need this MBA
Me: I'm at a stage in my career where I"m transitioning
VO : Ohhhhhh stop it, you can't be attending this type of school and presenting a rehearsed speech. But its ok to be nervous
VO : Did you take any tests
Me: Oh yes I did I took the GRE I had a 310
VO: You GRE score is not so great how come you received a scholarship

Me: Oh yes, (passes the document and tries to push it in further)
Vo: (In an angry tone) Are you aware that you can just drop the document and I'd pick it from there
Me: Oh sorry Maam
Vo: wow, the interest rate on this loan is very high, how do you intend paying for this
Me: Upon returning I should earn higher and I'm also on study leave
VO: Do you have other financial documentation
Me: Yes
Vo: (she scans the documents and does some calculation) I see that you have only fund to cover your first year. how do you intend to fund the other year. I also see that you wrote that you earn N1.2 m monthly but the document you presented shows that you 900k
Me: No its 1.2 that document is a loan investment of 9m and not 900k. Also I'm on study leave and I'd earn higher when I return
VO: But still this can't barely cover you assuming your wife is working
Me: My wife works
Vo: I know but it won't cover you.r expenses. I'm saying this because I also took a student loan to fund my education and I'm still paying till date. what I can say is that if by next year you don't have funds to complete your education, please come back to Nigeria.
Vo: (Passes back my i20, reaches for the white paper), Thank you

LordSir1: Hello..my visa was approved some days back, I really learnt a lot from this forum and hopefully someone can learn from this too. Overall the interview was good, the VO was really nice. I thought the interview was going to be in an enclosed space though lol
Visa Approved
VO: you're going to the US, tell me about this? Me: I'm going to the US for a Master's in Engineering with a focua in industrial automation and control at Texas Tech University.
VO:what will this course do for you? ME: Upon graduation and completion of my Masters program, I will be a skilled and highly proficient Control Engineer applying advanced automation processes in production system. This is a skill that is in high demand in Nigeria especially in the manufacturing and production industry, from the oil and gas sector down to the production of consumer goods. I plan on returning back to Nigeria to apply this skill and take advantage of this opportunity.
VO: how many schools did you apply to? Me: I applied to four schs..mentioned them.
VO: how many admitted you? Me: I got into 3.. Mentioned them
VO: why Texas tech? Me: Apart from the Whitacre (I'm not sure I pronounced this right) college of engineering at Texas tech being highly prestigious and well respected, I am keen on joining an ongoing research in pulsed power and control led by Dr Dickens, this is a great and direct step up from my undergraduate thesis were I also worked using pulse width modulation. I also received a partial scholarship at tech.
VO: when did you finish sch and what have you been doing? Me: I graduated with a BSc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Nov 2017 and was mobilized for national service in January 2018. I served as a physics and ICT teacher in a federal government sch and I completed my service in Jan 2018. During this period, I took several refresher and graduate preparatory classes as part of my preparation for graduate sch.
VO: who is sponsoring you? Me: my father
VO: **asked for his SOA
VO: what does he do?
VO: have you been to any other country? Me: yes, I had bachelor's degree in Ghana
VO: I'll be approving your visa............
I stuttered a bit and I won't say my delivery was exactly the best but that was it. God did it. Again thank you.
PS: if you're also heading to Texas tech or already there, send me a pm if you don't mind. Congrats 1 Like |

LordeCalifornia:
hi Sharwama. greetings. I am always inspired by your posts. please I want you to help me out with something.
I am a presently a student in a Nigerian university, studying Chemical Engineering. I am in my 4th year and would be rounding off from school next year, 2020. After which I intend to go for my NYSC programme.
After NYSC, I would want to further my Education in the USA, in a very good university with partly or fully funded scholarship. (I have a very good CGPA)
what I need from you is a guideline on how to achieve this dream of mine. you could use your own story to explain the steps I would need to take at every stage of my life. like when to sit for GRE, TOEFL, when and how to search for schools and how to apply to desired schools, how I can apply for grants and scholarships. how to apply for visa. etc basically, just tell me your story sequentially, how you started out as just a naive Nigerian girl with nothing but a dream to how you got to this level that you presently are.
You need not go into full details. Just a summary would do. I do not urgently need this, so take your time.
you could post it here, but i would greatly prefer you send it to my email xupernover@gmail.com
Thank you as I anticipate your reply.
regards! Start following this thread and this thread https://www.nairaland.com/1832477/how-achieve-high-scores-greU dont need any guide u will understand everything I said this because am also in ur shoe 4th year student with a good cgpa but am finishing in 3 months time This my 2 cents 2 Likes |
