The Bayelsa House Assembly says it would engage the services of an insurance firm to ensure pension for members of the 6th assembly in the state.

The Speaker, Mr Tonye Isenah, made the disclosure in Yenagoa during a courtesy visit by the state’s chapter of Federated Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union Journalists (NUJ), on Wednesday, NAN reports.

He explained that the pension bill passed by the 5th assembly for lawmakers failed because no public hearing was held before it was passed.

Reacting, Isenah said the new leadership of the assembly is poised to reposition the state legislature, because there is a new paradigm shift in the system.

“We will do the pension bill differently this time; we are going to work with an insurance firm, because the legislators have to plan their retirement.

“Let the insurance company used it to do business and let’s get the profit and take it back, so that at the end of our tenure, we will get something apart from the severance package.

“The insurance company will now be paying us a particular amount for a certain period. I think we can work on that one.

“Our last pension bill failed, perhaps because the people were not carried along as there was no public hearing to properly enlighten the masses on the pros and cons of the bill.

“All bills in this new legislature must pass through public hearing stage,” he stated.

NAN reports that the 5th assembly bill had proposed N500,000 monthly pension for the Speaker; N200, 000 for the Deputy Speaker, and N100, 000 for each for the 24 members of the assembly.

They won't invest monies to develop citizens, but when it comes to their pension, they suddenly know what to do. It's even absurd that legislators in a state filled with cultists and high number of out of school children will be receiving pension. For what?

You see what we have been talking about PDP, their members are like locust. PDP is synonymous with destruction. Bayelsa people should protest against it. They should picket Bayelsa state house of assembly and governor's office.

It fine for them to request pension so long it would be contributory pension scheme deducted from their monthly salary

Politics is a lucrative business in Nigeria, that's why politicians can kill their blood brother just to win elections.

So an elected lawmaker for 4 years will also get pension for life.

This is very wrong because it is a minor political office with a tenure of 4 years which can be renewed even for life if re-elected for life. Governors, Presidents have 4years maximum of 8years.

Politicians don't deserve pension because they are not civil servants. They are elected politicians who only stays for 4 years or more if re-elected.Politticians from other state should not copy Lagos state where Lagos state lawmakers are godchildren to tinubu. For them to compensate tinubu for installing them as senators they decided to amend the law to make tinubu a pensioner for life. This includes renewing his cars to brand new ones every 3 years and building houses for him..Lagos state retirees who served the state for 35 years don't enjoy such benefits. They also make tinubu's companies sole collector of taxes, consultants and his companies also get contracts to construct roadsThis is ridiculous.
