Last week, Mercedes confirmed pricing details for the new 2020 GLS SUV, which has a massive price increase over the outgoing model. At the time, however, the automaker only revealed pricing for the entry-level GLS 450 4Matic, which starts at $75,200 excluding the $955 destination charge.

Now, the German automaker has confirmed the more powerful GLS 580 will set you back at least $97,800 before taxes – that’s a massive $22,600 premium over the base model. So what upgrades do you get to justify the extra cost?








Compared to the entry-level GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 swaps the inline-six 3.0-liter for a larger 4.0-liter V8, both of which feature an integrated electric motor system. Power increases from 362 hp and 369 lb-ft to 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, while the EQ Boost adds up to 21 hp and 184 lb-ft. Both engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and AWD system.

Thanks to the more powerful engine, the GLS 580 will hit 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds, which is 0.7 seconds faster than the entry-level model. Top speed is limited to 130 mph in both models, while the V8 version is 0.2 inches longer than its six-cylinder counterpart, at 205.2 inches.






Compared to the outgoing model, the new generation GLS is available with a six-seat configuration that includes Captain's Chairs, meaning there’s now a choice of either a three-seat rear bench seat or two individual seats with armrests in the second row. Standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch multimedia display with the new MBUX system replacing the old 7-inch infotainment screen with Mercedes'COMAND, a new- touchpad in the center console, and a new 64-Color Ambient Lighting system.

An online configurator isn’t live yet, but adding optional extras list will hike the price up beyond $100,000. This won’t be the most expensive 2020 GLS either, as the AMG GLE 63 and an ultra-luxurious Maybach variant will join the range in the future. The latter is expected to become the most expensive US car ever built with a starting price of around $200,000. The 2020 Mercedes GLS is expected to arrive in US dealers before the end of the year.
