Hartis will now be above David de Gea’s long-time goalkeeping coach and good friend Emilio Alvarez. According to a UK Metro citing SunSport, the appointment of Hartis came after De Gea’s below-par season under Alvarez. Alvarez arrived at Man United three years ago at De Gea’s request and widely credited for the Spaniard shot-stopper's impressive goalkeeping skills. However, De Gea endured one of his worst seasons since moving to Old Trafford last season, making a number of high-profile blunders especially at the end of the campaign. As such, Solskjaer decided to make a change, turning to Hartis, who spent a decaced at United under Sir Alex Ferguson as head academy goalkeeper coach before briefly working with the first team. "Richard is a fantastic goalkeeping coach and has a proven track record of developing goalkeepers for winning teams," Solskjaer said moments after Hartis' appointment. "The depth in goalkeeping talent at Manchester United is exceptional and I know that Richard can help to take them to the next level," he added. Meanwhile, the move could prove risky, with De Gea understood to be close to Alvarez as they spend a lot of time together both on and off the pitch. Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it clear that he has faith in goalkeeper David De Gea despite poor form last season for the Red Devils. The Spain international has not kept a clean sheet in 12 matches with the Red Devils conceding more nine goals in their last three games.
