If they were active, one of them would have blocked the ball. If Alves was more cautious of his action, he could have taken the ball completely away from Muller's path. But can’t we say the way the cross came in very well, Alves couldn’t do better? There's something about the cross.

I would give him cos in the first place, the ball wouldn’t rise without getting kicked. I also want you to see it from the perspective that Kroos could have attempt at goal, but used his instinct to send the ball into the area for his team mate or to destabilize the Portuguese defense. Whatever way you choose to look at it, the ball/aim was achieved. Alves failed on kroos' ball and Germany scored thereafter.
