The serious injury to the club vice-captain means FCB have paid a heavy price for their third Champions League victory in four Group A fixtures and their first-ever win against the men from Naples.

The 27-year-old Germany star sustained the injury in the 50th minute of Wednesday’s match after landing awkwardly following a hefty aerial challenge from Napoli’s Swiss international midfielder Gökhan Inler. Schweinsteiger was carried from the field on a stretcher and taken directly to a Munich hospital, where the initial diagnosis was confirmed.
