Security agents doubt Okah’s Al Jazeera interview
By Elizabeth Archibong
October 8, 2010 04:52AM

Nigeria’s security operatives have expressed doubt about the authenticity of the celebrated interview with a former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta’s (MEND), Henry Okah, by Al Jazeera, during which he said an aide of President Goodluck Jonathan asked him to implicate Northern politicians over October 1, 2010 bomb blasts, which left 12 persons dead.

A security source said investigations within the security services in Nigeria and South Africa revealed that the interview with Mr. Okah might have been faked to deceive the Qatar-based news network.

The source said last night that their South African counterpart confirmed that, “at no time did we allow Okah to make such telephone contact. Following suspicion raised about the authenticity of the interview, we contacted South Africa to confirm its validity, but were shocked to find out that at no time did such interview take place,” he said.

“In fact, our contact wondered why it took us so long to cross check this information because they did not want to interfere, since the issues did not concern their government directly. They have been waiting for such security inquiries from their Nigerian counterpart before revealing the veracity of the interview, since the content does not concern them directly.”

Al Jazeera confirmation

An Al Jazzera reporter, however, told NEXT that the interview was conducted with Mr Okah. The reporter said Okah called from South Africa and he was passed on to the company’s studios in Doha.

“He called me from prison on a +27 number,” the Al Jazeera staff said. “We had a long discussion about the bombs and the situation in general. Clearly, they are allowed access to fixed phone lines in SA prisons. I asked him whether he would be prepared to be go live on Al Jazeera that very instant. He said ‘yes’.

“So I gave him our newsdesk number in Doha - and alerted them to the fact that Henry Okah was about to call from prison. He called, and they put him right through to the studio and live on air,” the reporter said.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) for the Niger Delta has also debunked the veracity of another Al Jazeera programme featuring alleged MEND fighters in the region. The JTF said an aerial surveillance of the region showed there were no longer any militant camps anywhere, as claimed by Al Jazeera.

“Al Jazeera, it will be recalled, had also during the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s health saga, staged a similar interview with the late president’s cousin, claiming that the sick man was healthy, playing with his children, and climbing 13-storey building,” a security source said.

We must begin to ask very serious questions of what Aljazeera's motives in Nigeria are.
The standing of that news outfit for all intents and purposes, is now shredded and in tatters.

From our own JTF.

Now, the questions;
[li]Why has Aljazeera stooped to lie?[/li]
[li]Why would a station with the international clout of Aljazeera believe the cheap lie that a terror suspect in custody can make calls?[/li]
[li]Who is behind the deception?[/li]
[li]If the phone calls to Aljazeera  originated from SA, which of Okah's associates is still roaming free?

Re: Okahs Al Jazeera Phone Call Fake - SA and Nigerian security agencies by Faeb: 9:11am On Oct 08, 2010
SECURITY agents yesterday picked holes in the interview conducted with the former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Henry Okah, by the Arab Cable News Network, Al Jazeera.

A source said the interview reportedly granted by Okah over the Abuja twin bombings leading to the death of 10 people was a fake.

He said the interview with Okah was packaged to deceive Al Jazeera.

Sources from the South Africa and Nigerian secret services revealed that “there is a great deal of doubt about the authenticity of the telephone contact between the media organisation and the embattled militant leader”.

The Nigerian Compass gathered last night that Nigerian security agents have confirmed from their South African counterparts who revealed: “At no time did we allow Okah to make such telephone contact.”

Okah, from his South African jail where he is currently facing terrorism charges, was said to have granted Al Jazeera the controversial interview.

“Following suspicion raised about the authenticity of the interview, we contacted South Africa to confirm its validity, but we were shocked to find out that at no time did such an interview take place,” security sources said last night.

Another source also revealed that the South African security services wondered why their Nigerian counterparts could not contact them immediately the interview was aired to confirm its authenticity. “They have been waiting for such security inquiries from their Nigerian counterpart before revealing the veracity of the interview since the content does not concern them directly,” the source said further.

In the midst of all theses confusions, one thing is certain - the bomb is a PDP bomb! GEJ,IBB,etc are all PDP and one of them has a hand in this nonsense to smear the other. All of them are suspects for now, no exemption. Save yourself some typing stress by leaving a blank comment, we already know your paymaster.

There is no bigger picture. You keep derailling all sorts of sensitive issues with your deslike for PDP. Is any party better? They are all useless and the same.
The impression one gets from your position, is that you are running a campaign and don't really care about the issues at hand, which is the unfortunate bombing and loss of life at Abuja.

ANPP lost their deputy boss to assassination yesterday, ACN is led by a drug lord; as for APGA, any objective person can see the degree of fraud and infighting they have, 47 parties have GEJ as their presidential candidate. Need I say more?
The issue is not any political party; it is Nigeria and its elite; so all you are doing is sowing seeds of confusion, because your arguments are completely illogical and 100% base sentiment.

I wonder why it took so long to confirm with SA authorities, was it because there was no NSA? SSS reports to the NSA and Azazi was only appointed on Oct 5.
That can't answer all question though, because someone must have been in charge of overall security. Was it Kayode Are?
Re: Okahs Al Jazeera Phone Call Fake - SA and Nigerian security agencies by edoyad(m): 10:30am On Oct 08, 2010
Kayode Are was acting in that capacity so we can't say there wasn't an Nsa, he being a former sss dg made him more than capable to handle that situation in acting capacity.

http://www.dailytrust.dailytrust.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4213:bomb-blasts-saga-oghiadomhe-not-detained&catid=2:lead-stories&Itemid=8

The Chief of Staff to the President Mike Ogiadomhe has not been detained or even sacked in connection with the Independence Day twin bomb blasts in Abuja, a Presidency source said yesterday.
The source also described as fake the interview relayed by Al Jazeera Tuesday with the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) Mr. Henry Okah.

Okah alleged in the interview that a top aide of President Goodluck Jonathan telephoned him in South Africa  and asked him to get MEND to retract its claim that it carried out the Independence Day bombing in Abuja so that the President could blame the blasts on some unnamed northerners.

The President’s men immediately denied the claim but the next day rumours began to filter out in Abuja that Ogiadomhe was in fact the top aide of the President who placed the call to Okah, and that he had been detained by the State Security Service. The rumour persisted when the Chief of Staff was said not to be in the office on Wednesday.

In denying the arrest, the source, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said it was the handiwork of political detractors who are bent on causing disaffection in the system.

“Yesterday it was the arrest of Oghiadomhe, today it is his sack and who knows what they will cook up for tomorrow? It is a sad way of playing politics and we encourage politicians to come out to face pure competition instead of resorting to unholy ways of pulling down political opponents.

“If they think they can be president, they should go out in very civil way and not by slandering and telling outright lies that can give them the Presidency,” the source said.

The source said the motives of these “political jobbers is designed to justify that Jonathan actually directed one of his aides to persuade embattled MEND ex-leader Henry Okah, to implicate northern political leaders, which the president never did.

“The group is also interested in destabilising the polity with a view to discrediting the ability of the President in running the affairs of government. They are not interested in the survival of our hard earned democracy. They are evil and agents of darkness,” the Presidential source added.

On the interview with Al Jazeera, the source said it was faked to deceive Nigerians.

The sources said investigations within the security services in Nigeria and South Africa revealed that the interview with Mr. Okah, may have been faked to deceive the television, Nigerian and South African intelligence services.

The source maintained that since his arrest, Okah has not made any telephone contact with the media organization, as the South Africa security services are said to have confirmed to their Nigerian counterparts that, “at no time did we allow Okah to make such telephone contact.

“Following suspicion raised about the authenticity of the interview, we contacted South Africa to confirm its validity but were shocked to find out that at no time did such interview take place.” On why it took the government so long to cross check the information, the source said it was because the government wanted to be thorough.

The sources added “the South African government has been waiting for such security inquiries from their Nigerian counterpart before revealing the veracity of the interview since the content does not concern them directly.

Daily Trust learnt yesterday, the government had complained to the South African authorities on why Okah was allowed to talk to Al Jazeera while he is in detention.

However, a senior security official told Daily Trust yesterday that under South African law, Okah as a mere suspect, is entitled to his phones and is permitted to make two phone calls each day.

In fact, the security official said, it had been made clear to the Nigerian government that Okah could be released on his next court appearance unless the government presents credible evidence linking him to the blasts. Some rights groups in that country had already started campaigning that Okah’s rights as a suspect must be respected.

Their concern was heightened by the manner of his arrest in which about 20 armed policemen stormed his home to take him into custody. Few days later his house was searched again but that no incriminating evidence was found.

----------------

That's to show how dumb the Nigerian security forces can be. They spread lies assuming their statements are not verifiable.  In developed countries, a suspect remains only a suspect until strong evidences are produced to confirm their guilt. As stated above, Okah is entitled to 2 phone calls daily.

I believe u. The problem is that PDP dominace is not healthy for Nigeria. We are almost a one party state. Do you guys know what that means? Let another party be elected. Nigeria can only progress if the party in power begins to feel real heat from oppositions. PDP does not have a candidate yet, but we have witnessed the arrogant build up to their primaries. They keep on telling us that their would be candidate will inevitably be the would be president of Nigeria. Can't you see the picture. Let the power go elsewhere than the PDP, am talking of progress in the long run. Nigeria will not be good overnight!

How does the proof that someone is desperately planting false news and phone calls mean anything, aside from there are liars and their agents roaming freely?
How does it mean anything other than someone is desperate to harm GEJ, but it just aint working?
How does it mean anything, but that the truth is coming out (even CNN has sacked a reporter for carrying a fake "Niger Delta militant" interview)?
