If you are expecting this again you are on a long thing...Infact what we pay now is still too small for quality education..Tuition fee needs to be increased if we want to be at par with the rest of the world..I am for an increase in tuition fee 100%..

That year above was 1972 when we were far more fewer than now..Nowadays all you all do is to fucccck and have lots of children you cant take care of expecting the government to help your ass out..The useless government too are as uselesss as fuccccck..

If we want good education,we pay for it!

Another thing was that it was harder to get into university then

You passed O level..and not at 5 credits too (5 credits qualifed one of my uncles...for teacher training college!). and then you did 2 years of A level...after which you had to pass WAEC A level (which was very tough)...then from 1978-87 JAMB on top again....

In my dad's alma mater in 1972 there were less than 5000 students. 5000. Now, it's above 30000.

when Nigeria was great..not this Nigeria we have now!!

No, when Nigeria had 5 universites, did not manage too many primary and secondary schools, when the number of Unity schools was less than 10, and when most schools were private or mission run.

The problem started when in 1973, we took over mission schools and built new ones by the ton because we had the oil money thanks to oil boom.

By the time the oil boom went bust in 1982...the schools were just albatrosses around our neck. Funds dried up, standards fell..and yet, we continued to do the same old...build more schools at all levels.

We need to spend N3trillion now yearly just to keep universites we had as at 2009 up to date. If not more. Our budget is 9trillion.

Rubbish

What are we going to show 2035 people?? Tears ,sorrows and blood.

In 1972, an average univeristy had less than 5000 students. We had just 5 of them. Most primary and secondary schools were in the hands of the missions, and private hands

Now, we have over 100 government run universites, and millions of students. And our educaiton budget is less than N1trillion naira. We need about N3 trillion in extra funding yearly to keep our unviersites up to date. Budget is N9 trillion. And we still have to fund primary and secondary school...that's another N2 trillion.

Corruption makes the matter worse.

Not to defend Buhari...but in 1984...if he did it....we were running out of money.

The oil boom of 1973, had burst in 1982. By 1983, we had austerity....things were hard. When Bubu overthrew the government...which he should not have done by the way, the money we had was poor. We had to make cuts...cuts in everything.

Buhari may be an evil leader...but universites are expensive. And by 1983....the expense was getting too much. Something was going to give....if not then, later.

Plus in 1972...the number of students in unviersites was less than 40000. We had just 6 universities. By 1984...we had 20 universites, and growing. Number of students was at 80000-90000. And the oil price had crashed....and was staying low.

Either we make cuts now...or cuts later.

Sorry, I don't like APC or PDP....but I also don't like the idea that we can be sustaining welfare on money that we don't have. Like what this APC government is doing now.

I do pity you.

So why are they bringing back the feeding program now in primary schools if today we are operating a deficit budget?

Read about the correlation between hunger and educational performance. Every country worth its onions provides food/cafeteria for students. Infact no provision for cooking in alot of universities. Do you think it's a coincidence educational standards plumetted in the 80s? How can you study when you have to return to your hostel and boil beans during your breaktime at 1pm and still return to class by 2pm?

I just realized that Nigeria was never great. It had the illusion of greatness back then, but was still coasting on the efforts of the colonial administration. Everything was made abroad and imported (albeit some knock down parts and assembly), but no real manufacturing to speak of. Can't be "great" if other countries make pretty much everything we consume (our machines, our weapons, our cooking appliances, our pencil and paper, the cement we used to import, and in many cases the food we eat).

There's nothing great in having somebody else invent machines to pump Oil from our land, bring and operate those same machines, and give us some small change so we can turn around and buy other things they invented.

Nigeria, never being great in the first place, had started on its trajectory towards mediocrity in 1966: young leaders with no clue or experience at government nor economics wrestled power illegitimately and proceeded to do so much worse than the politicians they condemned.

I don't think this is correct because there was no NAIRA in 1972. Nigeria officially changed from Pound and Shilling to Naira and Kobo in 1973.

go and check your history again, we had a manufacturing industry, Furniture fridges, tyres, textiles, we had it all, we asssembled peugeot, Audi, wolkswagen land rovers, range rovers, mercedes and steyr trucks among others I may have forgotten and we had local factories that supplied locally manufactured components under the local content laws at the time. for instance local manufacturers MANUFACTURED the seats and air conditioners for Peugeot, the tyres ware manufactured here by Dunlop and Michelin. The brakes were manufactured her in Nigeria by ferodo in Ibadan. Adebowale industries manufactured fans, fridges air conditioners etc Kano was full of textile mills. The Tejuoshos made their fortune manufacturing Mattresses, there was also Vono, they are all defunct now. There were many furniture manufacturers who manufactured quality furniture on an industrial scale for instance Bisrod and Nirowi, There was an Uncle of mine who manufactured batteries for the Car assembly plants, there was also BEREC batteries who manufactured household batteries, I can go on and on. They all started to die after Buhari took over in 1983 and IBB and his SAP just dealt the final blow!!

University education is expensive.

I hate saying it, but either we find 1.5 trillion naira yearly just for universities, more if we want free feeding, or we take a loan.

Or we cut subsides completely and spend the cash on education

And yes, that school feeding thing is not sustainable.
Sorry, life is not that easy.

Nigeria will become a rich country when we get off oil.

We don't need more funds. We need to block leakages in the current system. Let all schools publish their books. Harvard runs on public donations and renders account to donors so lets stop pressurizing and blackmailing our govt to spend more money.

We do, but here is the problem, even if we do, there is the ASUU FG agreement of 10 years ago which stated that univerisites need 1.5 trillion in extra funding annually.

After all leakages have been blocked.

Harvard has a budget higher than some Nigerian states even. Plus their fees are sky high.

Yes, it was subsidized.

And the signs that the subsidy was getting unsustainable manifested in 1978 when food prices in canteens went up in univerisites (to 50k) ,which led to riots, which led to students being shot by the Army.

The wastage in education sector alone is more than that of any other sector. The average ui grad consumes about
400-500k subsidy per year and by graduation that could accumulate to N2m.
Some even graduate and go and start selling rice and beans, leaving their expensively acquired skills behind. Who bares the burden of such systemic wastage? The system A.K.A Nigeria.
So people must know what goes into their education and make conscious effort at using the acquired skills to benefit the society.

How did Harvard grow to become so big? By wasting money? By failing and discouraging students? or by their grads abandoning their acquired skills to become runs boys and girls?
