go and check your history again, we had a manufacturing industry, Furniture fridges, tyres, textiles, we had it all, we asssembled peugeot, Audi, wolkswagen land rovers, range rovers, mercedes and steyr trucks among others I may have forgotten and we had local factories that supplied locally manufactured components under the local content laws at the time. for instance local manufacturers MANUFACTURED the seats and air conditioners for Peugeot, the tyres ware manufactured here by Dunlop and Michelin. The brakes were manufactured her in Nigeria by ferodo in Ibadan. Adebowale industries manufactured fans, fridges air conditioners etc Kano was full of textile mills. The Tejuoshos made their fortune manufacturing Mattresses, there was also Vono, they are all defunct now. There were many furniture manufacturers who manufactured quality furniture on an industrial scale for instance Bisrod and Nirowi, There was an Uncle of mine who manufactured batteries for the Car assembly plants, there was also BEREC batteries who manufactured household batteries, I can go on and on. They all started to die after Buhari took over in 1983 and IBB and his SAP just dealt the final blow!!
Their is a big difference between assembly or packaging and end-to-end industries. Most of those where assembly and packaging units.

Yes, it was subsidized.

And the signs that the subsidy was getting unsustainable manifested in 1978 when food prices in canteens went up in univerisites (to 50k) ,which led to riots, which led to students being shot by the Army.

Amodu...Ali must go. Yep.

Nothing beggars the increase of prices by 100%. It was pure economic incompetence.

They are feeding primary school kids today for free (not subsidized by parents) and we have a budget deficit. Plus same person has driven exchange rate and food prices by 100% or more in just 12 months after taking over. Sounds familiar? You still want to defend the indefensible?

The wastage in education sector alone is more than that of any other sector. The average ui grad consumes about
400-500k subsidy per year and by graduation that could accumulate to N2m.
Some even graduate and go and start selling rice and beans, leaving their expensively acquired skills behind. Who bares the Borden of such systemic wastage? The system A.K.A Nigeria.
So people must know what goes into their education and make conscious effort at using the acquired skills to benefit the society.
even selling rice and beans after ur university education is better or wat can u say about those who after getting their expensive univ education end up as okada riders or street sweepers.

If you are expecting this again you are on a long thing...Infact what we pay now is still too small for quality education..Tuition fee needs to be increased if we want to be at par with the rest of the world..I am for an increase in tuition fee 100%..

That year above was 1972 when we were far more fewer than now..Nowadays all you all do is to fucccck and have lots of children you cant take care of expecting the government to help your ass out..The useless government too are as uselesss as fuccccck..

even if they increase tuition fee in nigeria they will still misuse it..no be nigeria again? Until a certain state of accountability is instilled in the nigerian society then it will be ok to increase tuition fee.

250 hundred naira meal today isn't decent. We should be talking 1k upwards for an averagely decent meal.

You mean 1k for a meal

That's too much pls for this second term ❓

That 25kobo is equivalent to #250 a meal now if not more
while that might be true, maybe then it might be easier for a common man to acquire the equivalent money consider to now. Am not very good at economics though

Is population responsible for the devaluation of the naira?

Their is a big difference between assembly or packaging and end-to-end industries. Most of those where assembly and packaging units.

if you read again I made a distinction between assembly and manufacturing, I specifically wrote MANUFACTURING in capitals to make the distinction many of the suppliers to the assembly plants were MANUFACTURERS. Tejouso was a manufacturing plant, so also was VONo, the companies that supplkied seats were manufacturers, My Uncle who supplied Battries manufactured his batteries. Dunlop and michelin were manufacturers, Bisrod and Nirowi were MANUFACTUrers, NAsco biscuits, Africola, Okin biscuits were all MANUFACTURERS, all the textile mills were manufacturers, should I go on?

Most of the large warehouses that are today used for churches and event centres in places like Oluyole estate, Ogba, oregun, Isolo, Ikeja, Apapa, Iluopeju etc were once manufacturing sites. To say Nigeria wasnt manufacturing is a display of ignorance. Nigeria was full on industries in the late 70s/80s. We never quite got to the next phase which is heavy industry, i.e steel etc before the whole thing came crashing but we were well on our way. How did Okoya make his money, go to Oregun, left and right what did you think was happening there, buying and selling? he has been manufacturing coolers, slippers and ball point pens and since the 70s! There is Adeola Odutola and his many industries, please google him for more knowledge. There is also Onwuka Kalu who made his money manufacturing nails in the east. I havent even started with the many manufacturers from the east and also the North especially Kano and Kaduna!

There was a law or policy on local content and import substitution which most manufacturers and assemblers tried to meet, so even those who were largely assembling tried to source some of their inputs locally!!

You are clearly not fully informed of what was going on in your country

Defeding what..

All I am saying is...we cannot subsidze educaiton unless we have the money to do so.

What your hero Buhari ius doing...is not sustainable in the long term unless we either take loans....or become an industrial nation.

Simples.

Good evening. PDP and APC are the same side of a crap coin...so they don't attract my sympathy. What bothers me is the idea that we are spending billions of money we don't have on corrupt ridden welfare projects. Yes...that includes this government and the past.

Supported!

I was reading Nnamdi Azikiwe's autobiography " My Oddesy".As far back as 1930s n 1940s when he went to university in America, he had to do odd jobs to pay his way through school. What Nigeria did in 1960s n 70s was Welfarism n a form of Socialism. It is on obtainable anywhere in the world. Even in 1972 when America was the richest country in the world, it didn't offer its citizens free education talk less of a free meal for its college n university students. If u want tertiary education u pay for it.

We wasted so much money during the oil boom era of 1970s.No development plans at all!

I just realized that Nigeria was never great. It had the illusion of greatness back then, but was still coasting on the efforts of the colonial administration. Everything was made abroad and imported (albeit some knock down parts and assembly), but no real manufacturing to speak of. Can't be "great" if other countries make pretty much everything we consume (our machines, our weapons, our cooking appliances, our pencil and paper, the cement we used to import, and in many cases the food we eat).

There's nothing great in having somebody else invent machines to pump Oil from our land, bring and operate those same machines, and give us some small change so we can turn around and buy other things they invented.

Nigeria, never being great in the first place, had started on its trajectory towards mediocrity in 1966: young leaders with no clue or experience at government nor economics wrestled power illegitimately and proceeded to do so much worse than the politicians they condemned.

1. Community colleges are not free for all.(Some students may qualify for free tution) Fees can be as high as $3000 and above (Had a relation who went to one by the way).

2.Community colelges give you an AB (Associate Bachelor's). If you want a proper BsC...you transfer to a proper college or university for a further 2-3 years of education.

3.The best community colleges can do for you is to reduce your student loans drastically. But they ain't free.

4.Most students in the US prefer to go to proper colleges. Community college enrollment is declining

A big thing in the US election right now is the promise being made by two Democrat candidates to forgive student debts.
