Disobedience means the refusal or failure to obey rules and laws. It means going contrary to stated or laid-down rules. The opposite of disobedience is obedience.

BIBLE TEXT: Psalm 78:10

“They did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his laws.”

Disobedience is an action that usually has so many negative repercussions. The bible is full of characters in the bible who disobeyed God and got punished for it. Their stories can serve as lessons to us in our journey of Christianity.

BIBLICAL CHARACTERS WHO ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH DISOBEDIENCE

ADAM AND EVE: Genesis 3

Everyone knows the story of the first parents, Adam and Eve. We read in Genesis how God gave them a simple rule.

And the Lord commanded the man, “You are free to eat from the tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”- Genesis 2:16

Of course they disobeyed. Genesis chapter 3 shows how the serpent deceived Eve, who in turn made Adam culpable. God had to punish them for what they did. Through their punishment, the rest of mankind also suffered. Thank God for Jesus.

LOT’S WIFE – Genesis 19

Lot and his wife were lucky that the angels who were prepared to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah warned them before the deed occurred. They were told to leave all their valuables behind and run as far away from the city.

They were given just one warning:

As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”- Genesis 19:17

As they fled, Lot’s wife of course looked back as read Genesis 19:26.

PHARAOH – Exodus chapters 5-14

Pharaoh was molesting and frustrating the lives of the Israelites and when they cried to God, He sent Moses and Aaron to give a simple message to Pharaoh:

Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.”- Exodus 5:1

From chapters 5 to 14, we read how Pharaoh continuously denied the freedom of the Israelites and how God punished Egypt with ten plagues. Eventually, Pharaoh allowed the Israelites to leave but then he chased them to the Red Sea where he perished with his army.

ACHAN – Joshua 6:17/ Joshua 7

When God asked the Israelites to overthrow Jericho, he gave them an instruction:

“The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent.” – Joshua 6:17

Achan of course disobeyed and kept some material things he found to himself. This put the Israelites into trouble. He was eventually stoned to death.

SAUL – 1 Samuel 15

Saul lost God’s approval when he was told to totally destroy the Amalekites. However, he chose to keep the good things to himself and he even spared the King, Agag.

As a result of his actions, God rejected him as king and refused to answer him whenever he called.

SOLOMON – 1 Kings 11

King Solomon is often referred to as the wisest and wealthiest man that ever lived. God made him a promise to keep him and his descendants on the throne of Israel forever as long as he followed God’s commands.

However, he had a lot of wives who eventually pushed him into serving other gods. One would have thought he would have used his wisdom to see where his actions would lead him.

The last years of his rule were not peaceful as he faced a lot of rebels.

JEROBOAM: 1 Kings 11:37-38

Jeroboam was a lucky man. God gave him ten tribes of Israel to rule over them and promised to make him and his descendants last on the throne. All he had to do was serve God with his whole heart.

Instead, he was afraid that the Israelites would move over to the land of Judah. He created idols and made the Israelites to worship them. The kingdom was eventually torn from his grip.

Are you saying disobedience leads to punishment or death or what?

remember we were told to preach the GOODNEWS.... so posting only Old testament stuff here is not goodnews. Goodnews is balanced. Yes people disobey, and get punished BUT that doesn't stop them from disobeying.
