Cantonese: The biggest fraud in politics is to credit a Nigerian politician with detribalization. A 'detribalized' Obasanjo ordered soldiers to kill and maim innocent civilians in Odi and Zakibiam for alleged security threat but couldn't repeat same when the same security threat scenario later played out in Shagamu and Ota both in his home state of Ogun. You people just love to cheaply shower these useless Nigerian leaders with undeserved accolades. 1 Like |

femarse:Why didn't Ifeajuna stop over in Benin City on his way to Enugu that afternoon and kill Dennis Osadebey? Was Dennis too hosting an official visitor from Europe? Why did the coup plotters go ahead with the execution of the coup despite being fully aware that their main target -Azikiwe, as later disclosed by Nzeogwu, had escaped from the country? Why didn't the other junior officers in the plot kill Ironsi when they later found him at a junction at about 4:30 am on his way to quell the coup that morning? If it was the mere visit of the foreigner from Cyprus that prevented Ifeajuna from killing Okpara, then why did Ifeajuna go into the premier's lodge in Enugu to have a tete a tete with Okpara who later assisted him in seeking assylum to Ghana where he escaped to? 1 Like |

9jaRealist:I quite agree with the guy you quoted. If you critically examine Adegboyega's claims in that book, you can't but notice the logical self contradictions and inconsistencies which actually give him away as trying to rationalize an ethnic cleansing which was presented as a nationalistic project to him. |

Deadlytruth: you don't get it , the coup is not about killing everyone , it's about wiping the slate clean, the country was bad because the people are the center was just dam too corrupt and in their own eyes the only way is to wipe them off, they are soldiers remember that said , the people that hold power were the northern oligarchy, and the west was their play ground , the east was not much experiencing any political upheaval at the time which is why everything that happened happened in the north and the west , akintola was killed , balewa was killed, bello was killed , their top military friends was also killed , okotie was killed too remember, the east was very well kept away from that power in the center to begin with , notable exception was azikwe who was personally save by ifeajuna , he will has his reason or perhaps internal weakness or loyalty to his people or whatever , ironsi was not spared , he escaped and when the coup plotters saw him at that 4:30 am they were just ordinary NCO officers and Ironsi was a General , just imagine the exchange that could have happened in that situation, the only people that would have had the boldness to shoot ironsi was one of the 5 majors , any other person would have been caged in fears , they are all military men look at the composition of the coup plotters , it sad the only thing people use to classify them is their tribe , that is the song they played , that is what they want us to listened to, but look at it again , they are educated people compare to 70% of northern soldiers , who are totally uneducated and the idea of coup would have sound terrible to them , and it not something they can be going about talking about before nzeogwu will deem it fit for u to join them , he will first engage u in the political happening in the country , he will examine ur thought , he will stylishly introduce wiping out the political class, see ur reactions , if u feel same way , u are in otherwise u are out, so u would agree with me that it will be difficult to involve northern officers especially since majority of them get to that position in the first place as a result of godfather's that the coup is meant to wipe out and he actually did inform many northern officers , most of them thinks he was crazy or joking 2 Likes |

Deadlytruth:Sorry Sir I'm not igbo. I am from Mallar in Bogoro LGA of Bauchi State so I'm a northerner. And it may interest you to know that the then Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was my tribe's man because he was Sayawa just like myself. But I'm still wondering sir, why is that when people speak the truth or have different opinions from popular opinions are simply referred to as IGBOS. why could not you just correct me without playing the tribal card . With this kind of your reasoning, Nigeria has a long way to go in her journey to civilization. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Deadlytruth: You mean the death of a Colonel was not important in the 1960s Nigeria? How many Colonel were in the Army as at then? Nzeogwu was even of lower rank as a Major, yet the Commandant of Nigerian Defense Academy as at then. Get your facts right. |

stzy: Patrick Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu. He's actually Igbo and was born in the North. Played a major role in the 1996 coup and actually Obasanjo's closest friend then. I remember reading this book and other books about the civil war as a child and discovered that Nigeria's problem started from the beginning. |

cosef: We are not talking about importance in the rank sense. After all Ademulegun and Shodeinde were of higher ranks than him. The importance here is about whether he was at the planning stage perceived as a possible stumbling block like the likes of Ironsi, Ademulegun and Shodeinde were and therefore targeted. Stop pretending not to be getting the drift. 1 Like |

delamb01: Sorry I labelled you an Igbo man for your opinion which is actually not factual. But you would really not blame me because Igbos are mostly noted to be fond of peddling revisionist tales about Nigeria's political history all aimed at denying responsibility for the pioneering roles their forebearers played in the derailment of Nigeria. But I am rather shocked that you, as a Northerner, could assert that Major Katsina was part of the coup plot. 1 Like 1 Share |

femarse: I don't agree with your claim that there was really no problem in the East hence a justification for the inaction of the coupists in that region. Please recall that in the interview granted by Nzeogwu shortly before he got killed, he said it unequivocally that the Eastern Region was their major target. Moreover, Azikiwe was the most corrupt element in that government as he was the first ever Nigerian to be indicted of financial crime. His indictment was done by the colonial authorities and not an indegeous Nigerian government hence it couldn't have been said to be political witch-hunting. So any anti-corruption revolution which the planners decided to to go on with despite being aware that the originator of the said corruption had been tipped off and had therefore escaped three clear months to the day of action was nothing but a ruse. 1 Like |

Deadlytruth: thanks for that insight, but there is something we should note , looking at what was about to unravel assuming you are opportuned to be in the picture of things , do u think it's ohk for them to keep waiting for azikwe?? knowing fully well that things can not always remain the same and transfer of military men happened all the time , as a matter of fact, the coup went ahead because of two very important reason , position of nzeogwu himself, his assess to weapon , the fact that he can get them and said he want to use them for training like the exercise damisa which was a full blown rehearsal for the coup right under everyone nose, secondly position of ifeajuna in Lagos , which gives him access to command distribution of weapon and vehicle , and another captain like that(I forgot his name , adeleke or so ) the timing and their position was perfect , do u think it is alright to have waited for azikwe to return ?? knowing fully well that in 2 weeks time they may all be transfer to other units , besides it's as a result of this transfer all the time that makes all this majors to meet each other in the first place that azikwe escape is solely ifeajuna fault which is a person decision not shared by other members of the group , that ironsi escape Is just chance or luck , he was not in the right place at the right time and that saved him , 6 month later thou , the guy was done 1 Like |
