Ordinary, the Governor is more powerful than the 3 senator representing his state... But in Nigeria things are not what they seem.. The scenerio which you just sited, they are various variables... So is not a Governor vs Senator power play, but FG vs state..

[quote author=kolaaderin post=80798257]Governor is far more powerful than a senator. Except for the senate president which is the number 3 man in the country. I don't agree with you. In advanced country Senator has more power and well respected. The Senate president is called no 3 man. The chairman of Governor is no what ?
Senators can make President to sing, I doubt that for Governor

What type of power?
The only power a state governor has more than a Senator is to steal more public funds ..
As regards immunity some fellow stated above, immunity has nothing to do with your powers..

A senator cannot have more power than a governor but the Senate can exercise more power than a state government in cases that have gone beyond the control of the state government.

A Governor is more powerful than a senator. But when they come together as d Senate, they are the most powerful institution in Nigeria. They can remove the president, repeal a judgement of even the supreme Court. So a governor dwarfs in comparison.

The Senate does not act alone in the above senarios you painted above. They need the input of the House of Rep i.e 2/3 of the National Assembly

Senators can evoke the Federal might. What makes the governor strong is the security details. The forces be it army, navy, police are all answerable at the federal level. Once an order of withdrawal is issued by IG of Police to the Police commissioner of the state. E don be for the governor.

A senator can initiate or invoke a constitutional act or move that will cost a governor his position. E.g state of emergency. The fact is that, constitutionally, the members of Houses of Assembly are more powerful than their governors, only that they trade their powers for bribes.Governors are so powerful in Nigeria due to the vast financial resources they control. Eg states' monthly subventions from FG.

Ehnn na based on general assembly matters...and besides the Senate is a legislative arm of government . The Senate is the head of all house of assembly in every states....they are law makers...so anything that deals with HOA..they have the right to interfere

I'm asking this question cos of the recent crisis in Edo state house of assembly.

The senate gave obaseki 3 weeks ultimatum to issue a fresh proclamation or they will take over EDHA.

Does the senate have the right to do that?

I Listen to what Sen rochas okorocha said about the ultimatum and also to what cruse Osagie said as well.

We want to learn

Are you comparing a Senator to a Governor OR The Senate to a Governor?

A Governor is more powerful than a Senator.
The Senate is more powerful than a State Governor.
But The Senate is NOT powerful than all the 36 state Governors.
This your question now depends on perspective.

Re: Senator Vs Governor: Who Has More Powers? by kitone: 12:10pm On Jul 31, 2019
There is nothing like running a state here.the legislature should be independent of state governor.yes the Governor can influence the out come but it should be done in fair manner.not sending text to some lawmakers to be sworn in at 12 midnight.the constitution envisages something like this that's why it empowers the senate to act as such

First of all, the Senate does not have the right to take over a state house of assembly.

As for who has more power, it is relative.

For one thing, senators and governors belong to different arms of government. Senators belong to the legislative arm and governors belong to the executive arm.

This means they have different functions. One formulates laws (senators), the other implements laws (executives).

However, the governor is more powerful in his state than the senator is in Federal level. The senator can only formulate laws, he cannot execute them. But a governor can formulate as well as implement laws using various executive institutions.

A governor can replace a senator from his state pending a rerun. A governor can institute a recall against a senator from his state. A senator cannot impeach a governor.

Obviously, a governor wields more power than a senator. The governor is just like the president on a state level while the senator is just a representative of the state who can only formulate laws.

So the constitution say governor to make proclamations and send date of swearing in to few members only abi.only to be sworn in at midnight.even if you don't like oshiomole.what is wrong is wrong.he should play the politics to influence who becomes speaker.not arranged a kangaroo arrangement.other members too deserved the right to choose who becomes speaker.and don't compare to saraki.every body knew the date some were just foolish to arrange useless meetings.so they are not the same

Kundagarten:

They activated the constitutional clause and Obaseki did it too by issuing out proclamation.
Obaseki has the upper hand here, he can't issue out another proclamation letter. Anyway the matter is in court and Obaseki will triumph.

In the state, it is the governor I.e cases where a governor prevented senators to go for a second term or fought with senators, states like ondo, Kogi, ogun, Kaduna etc.
At federal level it is the senators e.g Kaduna state senators prevented el rufai access to an IMF loan
We are not talking about politics here.. He is not asking about political influence/wherewithal. Because Nigerian politics and politicians are joke. But the legal aspect of it. That is in the eye of the law/Constitution.

Those Senators are jokers. Ordering a Governor? The Constitution is very clear. The times when the National Assembly can exercise power in a State are: 1 When the President declares state of emergency on a State, both the Executive and the Legislature will be dismissed. A sole administrator will be appointed by the President to govern the state, while the National Assembly will be responsible for legislative functions in that state. 2. In the absence of House of Assembly in a state, National Assembly will take over the legislative affairs of the state. I think this is what they are trying to do here.
3. When a law (in the concurrent legislative list) made by a state House of Assembly is in conflict with the federal law, that of the federal law will be prevail, while that of the state will be void.

Because Nigerian federalism is being run like a unitary system when all power is arrogated to the central, these jokers think they are more powerful than the federating units. Nigerian federal system was fashioned by the military govt in accordance with military hierarchy and chains of command where military administrator will be appointed to all the states by the Military Head of State. That mentality is still with us till today

Not really, but they ve power over state Assembly.
In this case, governor will not be able to approve anything eg money, contract without the conscience of Senate. Even state gov av to always sick the approval of the senate before he can appoint any political appointment. They also impeach him if he those otherwise.. That is what constitution says
