The Toyota RAV4 is one of the best-selling car in the World, behind only the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks, but how safe is it in a crash? The IIHS recently tested the 2019 RAV4 and as you’d expect, the results were excellent (with a slight caveat).


There’s a big caveat, however. The TSP+ award only applies to RAV4 Hybrid Limited models that are equipped with the available curve-adaptive LED projector headlights. These headlights earned a “Good” rating, but the other headlights in the RAV4 lineup didn’t fare as well. The LED reflectors on the gas-only RAV4 and the Hybrid LE trim received a “Marginal” rating, while the static LED projectors on the Hybrid XLE, Hybrid XSE, and Hybrid Limited are rated “Poor.” The CR-V’s headlights are rated “Acceptable” or “Marginal” depending on the trim. Halogen lights on the LX, EX, and EX-L are “Marginal,” while the LED reflectors on the Touring trim are deemed “Acceptable.”


Like the CR-V, the RAV4 earned “Good” scores in all crash tests. Fortunately, this doesn’t vary based on trim. Both vehicles got a “Superior” score in front crash prevention, avoiding collisions in the 12-mph and 25-mph tests. But while this rating comes thanks to an optional safety system on the CR-V, the RAV4 earns it all with standard equipment.
