In case you missed the article itself I will reproduce the section that answers your questions. Better still read the whole article again with an open mind.

Intellectual Fraud And Its Unwitting Validators

Even former president Bill Clinton was suckered by the fraud, famously referring to Emeagwali as “one of the great minds of the information age” in his speech to the Nigerian National Assembly in 2000. The Clinton reference has provided cover and alibi for Emeagwali to perfect and spread his false claims. Predictably, Emeagwali’s defenders point to the Clinton reference and to CNN’s and TIME Magazine’s references to him as “a father of the internet” and “the unsung hero” of the internet age respectively. These references are boldly displayed on Emeagali.com for the obvious purpose of convincing the uninformed that his claims have been vetted and endorsed by these entities. The problem is that these media organizations sadly endorsed the claims without vetting them. Part of it is sloppiness, but much of it is the result of what black intellectuals who live in the West understand and experience as white liberal pandering, which is itself borne out of white liberal guilt and the fear of the “r” word (racism).

Obviously Clinton was pandering to his Nigerian hosts who believed Emeagwali to be a scientific genius and national hero. Clinton, the savvy politician that he is, and a man who perfected white liberal outreach and pandering to black/African peoples, was relying on the image and descriptions of Emeagwali that was already in the black and mainstream press —descriptions that are traceable to Emeagwali's own misrepresentations on his websites. What Emeagwali does is so clever as to ensnare even a skeptical and vigilant observer, especially one that is already inclined to believe or seek out claims of black scientific achievement for whatever reason. As indicated earlier, Emeagwali plants these autobiographical write-ups that are ridden with falsehoods and misrepresentations in unsuspecting black publications. He does this by aggressively pitching these claims to their editors as he tried to do unsuccessfully with Ms. Okelola. Then, fired by liberal guilt and a desire to seem welcoming to black achievement and excellence, the mainstream media like TIME and CNN, lazily pick up these references and descriptions. Emeagwali then links to, disseminates, and publicizes these mainstream press references and descriptions (which are actually based on his own descriptions of himself and his "achievements”), thus perfecting and furthering the fraud. This way, he creates deniability for himself. The deception comes full circle but the cycle continues to repeat itself, populating and repopulating the Internet with Emeagwali’s falsehoods.

The sophistication and complexity of the fraud notwithstanding, there is no excuse for reputable organizations like CNN and TIME not to have done a simple due diligence on the false claims of Emeagwali. It is true that at the time that TIME and CNN made the glowing references to Emeagwali, the now widely available refutations of his claims were probably not yet available on the internet. Even so, a basic inquiry from the appropriate quarters would have revealed the truth about the claims on which the references to Emeagwali were based. The two reputable organizations failed to carry out this basic fact checking, an elemental reportorial and investigative duty of journalists. Instead, they relied on Emeagwali’s widely disseminated falsehoods for their stories. The case of TIME is particularly scandalous. The story in which it extols Emeagwali is clearly directly based on Emeagwali’s own autobiographical claims on Emeagwali.com. In fact it is a faithful, almost verbatim reproduction of Emeagwali’s self-written profile. It is lazy, sloppy journalism at its worst.

There is similarly no excuse for President Clinton’s speech writers not to have done basic checks or asked some of the president’s own appointees and advisers who are engineers and scientists about the true value of Emeagwali’s work. Had they done this relatively simply investigation, they would have realized that being a default winner in one category of a minor supercomputing competition for work that has a specific, limited application in the narrow field of oil reservoir modeling does not qualify one to be called “one of the greatest minds of the information age.”

A Self-Replicating Fraud

When challenged, Emeagwali and his supporters can say he is merely repeating and linking to what others call him and say about him and that he does not call himself a father of the internet or a doctor or a professor. But the fraud is a self-replicating one, perpetuating and proliferating itself across both the print and virtual media worlds. Other publications that are searching for black scientific achievers do an internet search and then rely on the previous press descriptions of Emeagwali, which ultimately lead back to the man’s fraudulent biographical claims on his own website. The lazy journalists and Pan-African activists lift these published claims and references (which emanated from the man himself), concluding that they must be established facts if other media outlets had already published them. And on and on it goes. It is a very sophisticated fraud that is aided by the virility of the Internet. This is precisely how even the prestigious Law School Admission Test (LSAT) ended up including a passage about Emeagwali in their test, a passage that is exactly the same as what Emeagwali published on Emeagwali.com about himself!! The examiners at the LSAT did not even bother to rewrite the passage. Nor did they bother to check the veracity of the claims therein.  It is clear that they were simply interested including a passage about a "black achiever" to fulfill the need for diversity of content and to deflect or avoid accusations from black test takers and other minority groups that the test does not represent or reflect the experiences of black people and is thus biased against them.

White liberal patronage of black people can be that shallow and sloppy — and insulting to the very people it purports to promote. It is political correctness and pandering marinated in a political agenda--that of ingratiating white liberal politicians and figures to blacks for political support and multicultural validation. The peak of this phenomenon is Black History Month in February when white liberal organizations and black institutions alike pull out all the stops to have self-promoting “black achievers” like Emeagwali speak to them. That's when they get invited by white liberal and African American organizations to showcase black achievement and innovation! White liberal patronage is a big industry in America. It takes many forms; one of them is what Pius Adesanmi calls the Mercy Industrial Complex (MIC). But the MIC is not as offensive as the false flattery and the silly excuses and defenses that white liberals advance for cuddling black failures and frauds. Hero-seeking black organizations have not helped matters with their patronage of people like Emeagwali. Emeagwali’s deception succeeds so well because of a multiracial coalition of consumers and enablers.

Emeagwali is a very clever, self-conscious scam artist. That is however no excuse for the black community to allow itself to be used to actively promote a fraud.

Every scientist understands that his/her work must withstand the test of time and scrutiny. Emeagwali is no exception to this standard.
Why this issue generates so much passion is beyond words.

The proponents of  Emeagwali do not want to see facts as presented to them. Instead,  they label every critic a racist and other choice names forgetting that one the very first  people to expose him was an Ibo lady by the name of Chioma K. Ezeilo.
She did not set out to expose him,  but she got curious because the numbers did not add up. Like all diligent people, she took it upon herself to investigate the truth further before she wrote her piece. From thereon, critics start to dig further.

Fact  Check, Gordon Bell is no where analogous to Nobel Prize both in recognition and price money. It takes years of research and dedication in a chosen field to win a Nobel.
So why the inference by Philip that the Bell Prize is like the Nobel of computing if not to embellish the value of Bell award to the ever gullible public?
There is no basis for comparison. Every year the world awaits the announcement of Nobel winners -such is the prestige associated with Nobel

Fact Check.  Ememgwali had nothing to with the Internet either at the infancy or at maturity of the project. Arrogating the title of "Father of the Internet" to himself is an affront to the real pioneers of the Internet. By using the word Father of the Internet, he is implicitly saying Internet was conceived by him! How ludicrous! There is no other way to construe the word " Father" in this instance.

Fact Check. Zip patent to his name, yet he claims he has over forty inventions.

Fact Check Zip peer review for a scientist of this magnitude.

Emegwali in my own opinion may not be guilty of any criminal code, however, he is guilty of deception, and undue embellishment of his credentials and profiting from the deception.
Is Emeagwali intelligent? Absolutely. He is not your average Joe in terms of academic intelligence, but that does not ascribe him the rights to deceive the public.  Moi 2 cents

Re: How Philip Emeagwali Lied His Way To Fame by Katsumoto: 11:38pm On Oct 21, 2010
This argument is just ludicrous; initially it was funny.
Is it not possible for Nigerians to criticise other Nigerians even if they are not from the same tribe? Should a Yoruba man be criticised only by yoruba men or should an Igbo man only be criticised by Igbo men? A lot of Nigerians, including Igbo, have accused Emeagwali of fraud, why is it then tribalism on the part of the non-Igbo critics? Why did the English not accuse the germans of racism/tribalism when Steinbruck, the German finance minister launched a scathing attack on Gordon Brown following his response to the financial melt down?

Emeagwali is no doubt a brilliant man; not many should doubt that. What they question are his actions since winning his prize. It appears that he seems to have more speeches than invention/patent/publications. For a scientist, he seems to appear more in non-scientific media than scientific journals/media. How did a scientist become a motivational speaker? What qualifies him as a motivational speaker? Do genuine scientists stop being scientists? Perhaps, he let his coming second in the Gordon Bell competition get into his head and stopped being motivated; who knows. Having a high IQ does not make you a brilliant scientist. Many fraudsters, serial killers, etc have very high IQs.

I think it was Hercules that made this point and I will make it again; Emeagwali his not in any way connected to the Internet. His name is not on any credits for the Internet. He is not in any RFCs or any publications. Even if the rumour was started by others, a credible man would have come out and dissociated himself from such stories but he didn't. Instead he allowed the story to get a life of its own. This story was then picked up by others; not everyone in the media has time to verify every story; and scientists do not have time to be correcting anyone. Besides, no one in the US really knows or cares about Emeagwali. The story about the 'Father of the Internet' was picked up by Negroes, mostly Africans, looking for a hero in a white man's world.

I leave you with an analogy. A man's house is burgled. Burglars make way with a Seiko watch but when insurance agents arrive, the man tells them it was a Rolex. Even though he was genuinely burgled, is he guilty of fraud?

My father use to say that those that are afraid of height will be the first to tell you how the top of an Iroko tree looks like from the top.
Nigeria and Nigerian good for nothing bunch will be the first to rubbish what they will ever dream of becoming.
Phillip Emeagwali is fraud they tell us. How smart he was to fool the whole of the intellectual world, especially the naïve Americans, their silly governments and their nonentity institutions, only to be found out by smart Nigerians scratching their bottom holes.
What a wonderful world!

What else is new? Tomorrow, they will tell us that Wole Soyinka did not write all those plays and that he stole his Nobel price from a Nigerian school of credit card fraud based in Thamesmead London.

What about, Chinua Achebe is a fraud too, who actually did not pen Things fall apart, but copied it from his school mate 65 years ago and then murdered that his friend and buried him in the ocean, so that no one will ever find out the truth, until Nigerian truth diggers in 2010 find out an publish the true story in Nairaland?

After all OBASANJO and his then attack dog Fani Kayode, in their kingship days actually did tried to do exactly that when Achebe/Soyinka refused to dance to their deceitful music by trying to tell us that those two great men are ot as great as we may think, that the world never really knew except them.

Emeagwali is a fraud? Well I quite happy to be one of those he is still fooling with his non-existing intellectual capabilities. Thank God, I am not a NIGERIAN! A proud BIAFRAN until next tomorrow.
Re: How Philip Emeagwali Lied His Way To Fame by ochocinco1(m): 3:18am On Oct 22, 2010
@Eziachi

How many people climbed on the bandwagon when this Fani Kayode tried to discredit Achebe.?

I bet not many. . .because their credentials are irrefutable.

The issue is not what Nigerians penchant for bringing people down. The issue is whether a man in the public domain is who he claims to be. Emegwali chose to be in the spotlight and hence he must be ready for all the scrutiny that it entails.

The case reminds me of an US Army Soldier who by all accounts was a stellar soldier and deserved to have this or that award. Problem is no one did and he took it upon himself to award himself and attach lapels to his uniform he hadn't been given.

When his case came to light, there were no charges of witch hunting. It was the consensus opinion, regardless of what you think you deserve you simply can't arrogate indiscriminately to yourself things you haven't been given. IT IS SIMPLY WRONG. And the man, honourable as he is, withdrew from the spotlight after being outed.

I have no idea if the allegations against Emeagwali are true or false. It is a matter for investigation for whosoever sees fit to show interest, from whichever tribe or country.

The responses to the allegations by his defenders are remarkably similar to the ones you get from politicians who ''blame their opponents and enemies'' or bankers who ''see conspiracies'' or sports administrators who deny irrespective of irrefutable evidence. If you have to defend him, do so through evidence and not throw ad hominems all over the place.

There is what is called supercomputers. We have supercomputers. I have been to where the canadian govt  have thier own supercomputer.

Re: How Philip Emeagwali Lied His Way To Fame by Eziachi: 3:32am On Oct 22, 2010
@ Ocho Cico,
I do not know what your background is, but if its science, you should know that it is not a world were any person can come out and make a claim and then every intellectual world will rush up and give him award like the Gordon bell award just like that. Comparing the issue in discussion to a U.S soldiering issue is an unbearable comparism. On one hand you have claimed to have no idea about Emeagwali or allegation on Niaraland idiots about him and on the other hand, you are making a profound conclusion that he is arrogating things to himself.

A man who I AM SURE without the internet you will never had heard of his very existence, let lone his works or background, just like thousands of other unknown scientists and brilliant mind.
Re: How Philip Emeagwali Lied His Way To Fame by becomrich13: 3:39am On Oct 22, 2010
I have had contact with him in the past. mostly true email.
I write computer program. I went to school over here in canada. And I know one of the easy thing to do is write code in HTML.   If you go to Emeagwali.com , it looks like he lack that skill of written code in html. I dont think he need a PHD to be smart, I dont have a PHD. I tell people and I dont cover it up. The reason is in canada, I may not even get a job for the PHD. I love living in Canada. so going to the USA and getting, which I tried before. I gave up. it is faster  to get it in the USA than canada.

But I would tell you people. There is a supercomputer. I know where one of canada supercomputer system is, I have been there , right here in toronto. And even the university of toronto has a supercomputer.

This is how personnal super computers look like. Mostly use by engineers. You dont need it in your house except you are an engineer. there are expensive in canada. I want to get one myself. cheaper in the US.
personnel super computer .  I have gone above the use of CPU , I should be talking about supercomputers for my processing now. My system crash all the time. I need a system with thousand of core to perform multiple task. The cheapest you can get is in the USA.

It was the same story, when in the early seventies, Prof Njoku Obi successfully invented the anti cholera vaccine, but guess what!  Laughable idiotic Nigeria and their moronic govt were busy disputing the effectiveness of the vaccine and the man himself, while on the other side of the world the vaccine is been used by WHO and many countries and health agencies till this day. Shameless people!!

It reminds me once again of another story, about a colleague of mine, originally from Osun state before he moved too the U.K to finish his houseman ship ad stayed, who happens to be PRESENTLY one of the best British experts/consultant on Arthritis/Acute Rheumatic issues, who was introduced to me five years ago by my son, who told me, how he seems to be looked down upon by other Nigerian doctors about his achievements and why I don’t have the same problem.

And I told him that I once was told by the hospital I was consulting with in Surrey,25 years ago that a foreign patient with a broken leg will prefer another consultant other than me, when he realised where I come from, but the hospital told him that, if his request is not based on medical ground, he can’t tell them how to run their affairs and when I did met him (a former military governor from the Midwest) I joked to him that next time he disrespect me, I will give him a Dettol injection and you can see the horror on his little stupid face.

NIGERIA in their peculiar way, hates good things, if Emeagwali was known as the chief drug baron of Brooklyn now, I am sure, this idiots will believe it without asking question without dispute. On this website, I once wrote about a good friend of mine, the late genius, Prof Ayodele Awojobi and I was aghast how little many of them who seems to have opinion on everything here knew about this great mind of out time before his death.
