his sch has a lot to play. If a 3rdClass Accountancy graduate of UNN wants a masters program in that dept/faculty,he only needs a strong/vocal Prof to recommend him. Also,most state universities would willingly take a federal university graduate with a 3rdclass and recommendation from a high authority.

Very few if any UK universities will let u go straight into a masters degree prg u might have to do a PGD , u also have to watch out for credibility , make sure they are on the list for recognised universities in the UK not any bogus college , they have been clamping down on those for some time now , no refund on your money oh!

alternatively dont bother with the UK (with all this cap or no cap on immigration palaver) , try canada or denmark ( they have schools that teach in English) expand your horizon , schools are far cheaper and cost of living is not as bad as the UK  .  Dont be discouraged though, not everyone gets it right the first time.

da entry level for any Msc programme in Bayero University, Kano is 3.00, or you go through da PGD. Pls we should check facts and not allow emotions to take control of our submissions. I did ma Msc in Mass Communication there.

Pls spend another two years to get another B.Sc and then apply for a masters programme.

@skyone, so many things can make somebody to graduate with such a low grade. so don't blame the guy cos u don't know what caused it, it can be wicked lecturers, sickness or other things, though some are caused by not reading at all or not attending lectures

This is important in the UK it is possible to go and do a Masters with HND and even lower irrespective of the university. The question is what competencies can you demonstrate and substantiate?

I guess its all about the ££££  if you can afford it, I would say the global recognition that a UK masters is attributed with, from most red brick universities will exceed any Nigerian masters, as well as give you much better career enhancement globally as well as in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the concept of grade as a measurement of competence has been lost on the politics and corruption that is so inherent in our university system, such that there is no uniformity in equating academic excellence in our Nigerian universities. Essentially, what i mean is that 3rd Class from Unilag may be considered as being better than a 1st class from Bukar Abba Ibrahim University, Yobe.

I will advice him to do a PGD, however he can still make it to the top if he is ready, the only way he can prove to everyone that he is a man is to go for a masters through a PGD.

You are completely wrong there. All [b]reputable UK universities require a second class upper degree and a  "postgraduate" diploma is simply a bachelor's level  remedial program.
It is simply a means for those who have substandard results in their first degree discipline to update and refresh their subject knowledge.

I am also a member of a university think tank, so I am conversant with university admission criteria at post graduate level.

I think you should check University of Glasgow. www.gla.ac.uk and they often come to Nigeria to speak and give admissions as well. Dave Abion in ikeja shld be able to help cos they are reps to a lot of schools in the UK and they wld let you know what your options are and what universities wld admit you.

I am not so sure but at the university of Glasgow you might be required to do pre-masters before joing the masters class and that might be for six months. At the worst they wld offer you Pgd.

I also know if you have experience thats for their mba classes majority of the time you wld be offered a place based on your experience but dont get your hopes high on that.

I finished from the university of glasgow and had friends that did the pre-masters.

It is true that some universities do admit pass degree holders to their taught masters programs but I am not aware of any from the RUSSELL group that do admit 3rd class degree holders. The don't need to as a matter of fact since  they have no problem filling their available slots.
You are now bringing up the MBA program which is of a very different nature to the specialised taught masters programs. And yes  you can get admitted to an MBA program even without a first degree at all. It is a very separate issue.
Let's call a spade a spade. An MBA is primarily a means by which non-business students can get acquainted with the theory and practice of business management.
There is  a cultural issue also in that students that go for specialised masters in England are those that are academically inclined. These courses enable such students to acquire first hand experience of specialised and targeted self study and independent research.
It is not seen as a means of "correcting" a substandard first degree or securing competitive advantage in the job market.

From experience, l know that most people who graduate with low grades in their first degree may have done so not because they are not intelligent but at times, immaturity, (especially when you enter at a very young age and you're the naturally gifted but playful type), inaccurate knowledge/late understanding of how the G.P.A course system works or even for lack of financial support to cater for under-G expenses.

I guess he has "matured" now and will do better in higher education.

IMO, your surest bet might be a PGD (if in Naija).

As a foreign student, it might not be easy for you to get an "academic waiver" on qualifications if you want to attend a recognized and not end up worse, with a "Toronto-rized" higher dgree

Hey, I had a 3rd class from a Nigerian University and I have just finished my Masters from a UK university. Trust me, many schools over here (UK) would offer you a place for a masters degree. All I will advice is that you search around for such schools and believe me, nothing is impossible. Cheers.

You see, some people on here just open their mouths and throw up things, without thinking logically.  Different Universities have their own agendas therefore, no one rule applies to all University in the UK. 

People forgot that University policies are not set in stone especially, these days they are all under-funded, chances are they would revise their policies to meet their financial needs therefore, would at any time consider lowering their intake requirements in the face of fierce competition from other Universities. 

Even the Open University would love to talk to him - their full time MSc courses are 1yr and part-time is 2yrs so, it's up to the individual to do his/her ground work and decide what he/she wants. But you have to be very, very determined to take on an OU course.  It can be very tough/challenging as it can conflict with your other lifestyles.

True that. There are of course a lot of small  private universities or online universities in England that would consider a candidate with substandard results.
They are  really just looking after their golden goose at the end of the day since in any case tuition fees are paid up front and are non-refundable.
However and away from these types of unaccredited institutions, the best bet for such a candidate who wants to do a masters at a Russell group university is to do a remedial post graduate diploma there and score well enough therein to be considered for subsequent admission to an MSc or MA program.
For an MBA on the other hand, it is best to apply for direct admission regardless of the standard of the candidate's bachelor's degree results.

For various reasons one can come out with a 3rd class.I know of a sharp guy that came out with a 3rd class due to circumstances beyond his control.Just shake it off and forge ahead.If you want to further in Nigeria then you can start with PGD because no Uni here will accept 3rd class for masters.In the UK,there are schools accepting 3rd class as long as you have the money.Its mostly the cash they are after and not the grade you graduated with.Try Bangor University in Wales,they gave 2 people i know very well admission with their 3rd class degree.Pls,dont let negative people put you down.You just have to be strong and think clearly on how to handle the situation.If u can afford UK education go for masters and they will surely give you admission.
