madridsta007: Mbok, how sure is the bold? And if it's true, why have the colonialists not done same with Malaysia, China, Indonesia or India? Please no conspiracy theories. 1 Like 1 Share |

Gerrard59: It is much easier for neocolonialsm to be implemented in nations where the seminal forces of tribe, ethnicity and religion is more evident and deep-rooted than the other. The divide and rule tactic, as implemented from Rwanda by the retreating Belgians to Nigeria by the British, where the colonialist set a usually weaker and more pliant tribe as rulers over the others, is much easier to successfully implement in Nigeria, than in China, India, Malaysia or Indonesia. You have named countries with large populations and less hetereogentiy of these factors (and there are more than 3 factors) in comparison to Nigeria. 79.8% of Indians practice Hindu; Is it the 1.7% Sikhs or the 2.3% Christians that you want to set up against a United 79.8% Hindu? Have it evenly distrbuted and it comes quite fertile for the Nigerian situation. Now there are many books and research papers written on this subject of colonial domination. You should read further if you want to know more. |

madridsta007: It's not issue of tribe /religion per se But it's more of ignorance, lack of education and having $hithole mentality Even homogenous countries in Africa are being screwed over The leaders of these countries offered up their countries in exchange for a pittance (a false sense of belonging/a seat at the table) These elite class are just gate keepers Making sure that their respective countries remain ignorant unexposed and uneducated So that they continue pillaging Look at tho sacrilegious deals your leaders are striking with Chinese interests? 1 Like |

DexterousOne: OK. I have been privileged to have written peer-reviewed academic papers in top quality journals on this. I think I know what I am saying. But your opinion is duly noted (even though I sense a deviation from the main question you raised. You seemed to have questions on my idea on the roots of imperalism in Africa). |

madridsta007: I'm not disagreeing with you I'm just Bringing a different perspective Heterogeneous and relatively homogeneous countries in Africa are being screwed over And the common factor between these two sets of countries is the high illiteracy rate, lack of proper exposure and EDUCATION and a mentally defeated bourgeois class often willing to sell their country for a pittance Maybe you should research from that angle too Cheers |

DexterousOne: Well, Sir, neocolonial intervention first seeks to exploit the gaping holes or the discontinuity in systems- tribes, ethnicity, religion, etc. When it finds a united people, it targets someone in the elites. For example, Blaise Compaore who was Sankara's close friend and eventual murderer. Or a unit of disgruntled elites as was in the case of Lumumba (the Belgians and the CIA) and Nkrumah (recent files shows the CIA involvement. Their argument? Nkrumah was a Communist, of course false!). High illiteracy rate, lack of education, etc, are only outcomes of neocolonialsm, once the Western-backed elites/leaders are in power (this wasn't my focus). This is playing out in Nigeria today. Thanks, though. It was nice chatting with you! |

madridsta007: Interesting... So in the midst of all these What is the way out? Tho I don't agree 100 % with the bolded At what point did we really have a critical mass of well informed and educated people in Africa? But I get you Your point valid |

DexterousOne: Sorry, these past few hours has been extremely busy for me with research commitments. Back to your question: I agree that there are hardly any absolute arguments. However, when there aren't any, we ask ourselves, "what does the current evidence say"? Hence I argued that those factors you mentioned are only outcomes of destructive neocolonial intervention. Upper Volta or Burkina Faso is a prime example. Thomas Sankara became President in January, 1983. His policies were centred at breaking the shackles of imperalism which includes prioritising education with a nationwide literacy campaign. At the point of his death there was a "critical mass of educated and at least" informed people in Burkina Faso; that was why the whole country mourned his death; that was why his killing was no popular uprising. His killing was done by the elites I talked about- that disgruntled element which the white colonialist has always been able to sweet-talk, to feed greed and turn him against his own people. Now iliteracy, that importnant neocolonial consequence, is back in Burkina Faso. [And I think we should escape the flaw of pidgeon-holing Africa; Africa is not a country. I prefer to look at country-specific examples or, region-specific]. What is the way out in the midst of all these? That, my friend, is a research topic for another day.... I've become extremely busier over the last few days. I have to go. Maybe later? All the best. 2 Likes |

salford:I don't in anyway support the jumbo take-home of our legislators. It's an absurd and labour could have shut the nation in protest for a detour, but what happened ? Labour, instead negotiated for pay rise. You mentioned protest,I hope you're not referring to bring back our girls and revolution now protests. They are borne out of politics. No intelligent people should be part of them. Meanwhile, why referring to Nigeria as a cesspit ?SMH. 3 Likes |

Only an idiot would not choose greener pastures if offered the opportunity. This article reeks of jealousy. If our leaders water our lawn then these individuals will run back without second thoughts. |
