I saw a post by a lady jess2019 here on this app https://www.nairaland.com/5367616/im-worried-sons-behaviour-he about how worried she is about her child's behaviour, but what caught my attention was the fact she said she has taken the child to a doctor and autism spectrum disorder (autism) was ruled out.

From her complains there were some point she made that supported pure autism. But what is autism, would like to start from there.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) manifests in early childhood and is characterized by qualitative abnormalities in social interactions, markedly aberrant communication skills, and restricted repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities (RRBs).

So what are the things you see manifested in autistic patients

* Developmental regression

* Abnormal reactions to environmental stimuli

* Abnormal social interactions (either not play with his fellows and stay isolated or play with them just to scatter their gathering or steal their toys so as to cause trouble)

* Absence of smiling when greeted by parents and other familiar people

* Language delays and deviations

* Susceptibility to infections and febrile illnesses

* Absence of symbolic play

* Repititive and stereotypical play. (like arranging shoes in a particular order eg from smallest to the biggest, Repititive plays like throwing his first in a particular way for a long time or rocking his chair for a very long time without stopping, )

* Angle gazing ( she mentioned the fact that her child looks up at the ceiling for a long time and you'll be wondering why he is doing that)

The woman said autism was ruled out, maybe the doctor doesn't know much about the types of autism. So let's talk about the types

TYPES OF AUTISM

1. Autistic disorder ( exactly what I described earlier)

2. Aspergers syndrome.: this occur more in male, and this one is the type where a particular part of the brain is more developed than the others, some it might be art, some arithmetics, some would be well grounded in school works and these people could possibly pass as geniuses in their respective fields. Remember this affect male children.

3. Retes syndrome : the third type that affect mostly female children, unlike the Aspergers, children here have deficit with no particular part of the brain well developed. And they usually have small heads, this starts occuring at age 5 of development

CAUSES

Although the etiology of autism is unknown, hypotheses include genetic abnormalities, obstetric complications, exposure to toxic agents, and prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal infections.

Maternal rubella is associated with significantly higher rates of autism and other conditions in children. Additionally, tuberous sclerosis is associated with autism as a comorbid disorder.

Approximately 10% of children with a pervasive developmental disorder exhibit a known medical condition.

TREATMENT.

please never listen to people telling you to bring your child to Nigeria or take him to boarding school in other thread. Please kindly read more about Asperger's syndrome, and try to make your doctor reason with you and be convinced that you are making the right diagnosis.

Then ask him for the pharmacological, social and psychological treatment, if the doctor is a specialist especially a child psychiatric specialist he will know what to do.

Kindly fill the questionnaire below to know more about your child. And please let's reach out to jess2019 to read more and lalasticlala to give us a wider audience.
May we never experience problems on our children
