Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Defence, Brigadier-General Bashir Salihi Magashi (Rtd) played an active role in the General Sani Abacha military regime, emerging details have revealed.

A lawyer, Magashi is a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.

Soon after Abacha seized power in November 1993, Magashi was given command of the Brigade of Guards, which was tasked with Abacha’s security. He was a member of the Abacha Military Caucus and was active in the process which forced the resignation of the Shonekan-led Interim National Government (ING) on 17th November 1993.

He thereafter remained a strong Abacha loyalist and served in the committee that issued a report titled The Way Forward with recommendations for a military regime as an alternative for Nigeria following the annulment of MKO Abiola’s June 12 mandate.

Nothing new. Most of the present and former political gladiators did same.

David Mark led the military onslaught against June 12. He’s one of the signatories to the annulment declaration. When some few members of the military ruling council were trying to convince IBB not to annul the election, David Mark said publicly that he would shoot MKO if IBB hands over to him.

Same David Mark became senate president of a democratic Nigeria for 8 years without anybody complaining about the ignoble role he played in the June 12 election annulment.

Even Buhari too served in Abacha's government. So what are you gonna do about that? Several Afenifere, Ohanaeze and ACF members too served in Abacha's government. So, go and find work lazy youth. A guy that could secure Abacha in Nigeria's most trying moment will definitely secure Nigeria in this trying moment.

The military from 1966 esp.the core northern military click really bastardized this country.All these former military leaders are today forming democrats.
