Following the oil-well fire outbreak at the Ojumole area of Ondo State in May 2019, the Ondo State House of Assembly has called on Chevron Nigeria Limited to assist the people of the affected communities by providing jobs for their youths.
The oil-well, which belongs to the CNL, was gutted by fire which affected about 10 communities in the Ese Odo Local Government Area of the state.

To this end, the ad hoc committee set up by the Ondo State House of Assembly to investigate the inferno met with the team from the Chevron Nigeria Limited on Wednesday to resolve the issue.
At the end of the meeting, some resolutions were made which included the clean-up of the affected communities by the oil company in line with global environmental safety regulations.

The Secretary of the Committee, Mr Benjamin Jaiyeola, read the resolutions to journalists after the meeting.

He said, “The ongoing interface between the people (of the affected communities) and Chevron should be strictly monitored to ensure that beneficiaries of all the affected communities are reached in no distant time.

“The meeting also resolved that efforts should be geared toward putting in place a permanent health facility in the affected communities and also direct Chevron to create jobs for the youths in the oil-producing communities.

“The ad hoc committee must be notified and properly informed in all major activities carried out in the affected communities and Chevron Nigeria Limited should create an administrative office in the Ilaje local Government Area as soon as possible.”

According to the resolution, Chevron should liaise with the state chairman of the board of internal revenue on the issue of arrears of taxes owed by the company and quickly report back to the committee in the next one month.

The chairman of the committee, Mr Abayomi Akinruntan, who lauded the oil company for quenching the fire promptly, urged it to do more in impacting the lives of the residents of the affected communities.
