THERE is tension in Osogbo as a sudden increase in Osun river which escapes from its course in great volume and flows over adjoining lands in no regular channel.

The new development has displaced hundreds of residents, destroyed and cart away property worth millions of Naira.

Some of the affected area as at the time of filing these reports include Gbodofon community, Awosuru area, Baruwa Area, and Ibu-Amo community of Osogbo, Osun State.

According to victim’s account, the surge which displaced Baale of Ibu-amo from his house started around 5PM on Friday which later turned to torrent flood which followed their vacation from the area.

It was gathered that the river surge could not allow the resident of the area to haul some of there belongings to a safer location.

A shop owns by a carpenter has been wrecked and properties worth millions was destroyed with it, an eyewitness revealed.

Kamoru Omolade, a mechanic said the flood has charted away A car, engines worth 750,000 naira, and has destroyed engines and some small buses which the water could not move away.

Kamoru, while speaking narrated, “It was just like a play when we noticed the surge in the river and it was reached my chest before I could move some of the engines that customers brought to me for servicing.”

At Baruwa area, the river surge started in the midnight on Frida and sipped into living apartments which caused people living along the street which is very close to the bank of the Osun River to start evacuating their personal belongings out of their houses.

Most affected were residents who have just finished completing their personal houses.

Eyewitnesses stated that the whole problem started in the midnight when residents were awoken by flood waters which started flowing into their houses.

Alhaji Moshood Adigun, a resident stated that, they never knew Osun River could overflow to that extent that it would wreck havwreak living quarters.

He stated that most of the house owners did not erect their houses near the river bank as most had taken time to build in safer areas.

Another resident, who identify identifiedas Mummy Precious stated that it was an unfortunate situation that such happened but that relevant authorities should come to their aid as there was little they could do to salvage the situation.

In her words, “we are calling on government t to help us. What happened has happened but what we need now is help.

“Government should help us. We are not planning to relocate but we need help”.

Already many sympathisers have started to theorise that probably a dam had burst upriver, a situation which made the river to overflow its banks and others maintained that the problem had been increasing from year to year and it will still get worse next year if nothing is done to prevent a reoccurrence.

It could be noted that a similar flood had ravaged Osogbo after a heavy downfall in July, 2010 with attendant loss of lives and properties worth millions of Naira.

You don't blame the river for that. grin It's a natural phenomenon in rainy seasons for the water level in rivers to rise due to constant downpour.

In situations like this, the FG comes in. What are they using contingency funds they always make provision for in their yearly budget for?

Waiting for the govt of the day to start blaming the residents for blocking imaginary drainage or building on top of River. I've never seen a govt in Nigeria take responsibility for anything.
