Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will be representing President Muhammadu Buhari at the state funeral for former President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe on Saturday.

Prof. Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, confirmed the Vice President’s attendance in a statement on Friday.



Osinbajo will be joining other African leaders and heads of state expected at the occasion scheduled for the country’s National Stadium in Harare.

Heads of state expected to attend the funeral include President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya.

Mugabe, who was Zimbabwean Prime Minister and later President for 37 years altogether, up until 2017, died last week at the age of 95 in a Singaporean Hospital.

The Vice President, accompanied on the trip by senior government officials, would be leaving for Harare Friday and is expected back in Nigeria later on Saturday.

Their presence won't be given much attention at the funeral because Nigeria is now an ordinary African country all thanks to their obnoxious internal and foreign policy.

I still remember vividly how Nigeria used to command respect in Africa and even on the world stage during Obasanjo's administration. Almost every week African leaders must visit Nigeria for one thing or the other. Even foreign presidents like George Bush, Tony Blair, Vladimir Putin etc.

Hate him or like him, Obasanjo was charismatic leader that command so mush respect among his peers back in the days. Unlike the present coward we have as a president.

The Buhari I know will never turn down such travelling opportunity without a reason behind it. And the reason is very clear. He knows if he attend the funeral his path cross with the South African president and Nigerians will realise that he has been faking anger about the xenophobic attack so to avoid the backslash, he decided to delegate the vice president to attend on his behalf.
