The Migration Adviser to the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria, Ms Jolands Pfister Herren, has said that it only cost N50,000 to secure a visa to travel to Switzerland from Nigeria.

Ms. Herren who cautioned Nigerians against falling prey to human traffickers or embarking on irregular migration said it was better to visit embassies and get answers.

She spoke in Benin City at a two-day stakeholders consultation to combat and prevent human trafficking in Edo State tagged “Community Action to Combat Human Trafficking.”

Herren said the Swizz-funded project being implemented by the Women Aid Collective (WACOL) was aimed to facilitate greater networking amongst stakeholders and to institutionalise early warning systems to prevent human trafficking and irregular migration.

She said the project aimed to engage traditional institutions and religious leaders in the state to sensitize and mobilise communities.

According to her, “The fight against trafficking in persons constitutes a strategic area of intervention of the Swiss foreign policy on migration.

“Switzerland is committed to staying engaged in the fight against human trafficking, sees it as a long term undertaking and is keen on exploring innovative and concrete ways of addressing this issue.”

Executive Director, WACOL, Prof. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo said the group is committed to ensuring safe migration options and safety measures to combat human trafficking and unsafe migration.

Prof. Ezeilo said the group opted to explore other ways to tackle the menace of human trafficking.

Benin Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) stressed the need to institutionalize early warning mechanism to prevent human trafficking at the community and grassroot level in Edo State.

Nwanwenne said human trafficking is degrading and dehumanising as well as violates the human rights of the victims.
