You did not answer why zik had to leave the east to be struggling with Awo for the western region premiership when the east is there, Greedy lot. and you have the gut to accuse fulani of fulanization.......FYI, pre independence, the Igbos believe they are the smartest people in nigeria and dominated every aspect of the nigeriam society from the military to the academia. and the igbo elite were besting their chest that the igbos will dominate the rest of the country,,,,,,thats why the igbo elite sponsored the first coupists because they felt they should be ruling nigeria and not the northerners. we all know you guys are one greedy bastards

Many Nigerians (including Igbos) have either heard this myth or voiced it in some occassions.
Do you know the history? Read and learn and diffuse your prejudices.

Before 1966, the Igbos showed a rare unity unexpected of a people that never had a central leadership in their history. That single-mindedness showed itself in the 1922 Aba women riot that saw organised protests from market women because of colonial taxes (1st of its kind in Nigeria). It also showed itself when the Igbos rallied around Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1953 to become premeire of the East after he lost out to Awolowo in the west. The Igbos supported him and effectively dethrone Eyo Ita from Calabar.

The Igbo unity and single-mindedness saw them develope a curious apprentice system that saw thousands of Igbo youths lifted out of the villages by masters who took them to cities (especially in the north) to learn a skill or a trade. The Igbos became a successful and visible minority through this apprentiship system all across Nigeria to the discomfort of the north.

The Igbos achieved another feet through unity of purpose when the Igbos of Delta province in Western Region, under the banner of Zik's NCNC, rallied to be carved out of the west along with the Edoids. This was at a time when Awolowo was fighting a political war with his protegè Akintola. The Igbos were able to divide the West and install an Igboman as Premiere of the new Midwest Region.

The unity of Igbos (plus their industrious nature wink ) also saw them 1st occupy the majority of post independence political positions. They occupied offices of President, Senate President, Speaker, Chief of Army, Chief of Police and dominated the government of Balewa and the Federal Civil Service. This caused issues ofcourse. Jelousy and envy was directed at the Igbos from all around.

Then the unthinkable happened cry Predominantly Igbo soldiers executed the coup that left prominent people from other tribes dead except the Igbos. And of course an Igboman was the beneficiary of the coup. Who wouldn't think it was another Igbo ''grand plot to dominate''?

Now to the origin of Igbos not loving themselves; the civil war and aftermath caused it all. How?
The Ijaws who were a major (probably the 2nd largest) ethnic group in the Eastern region were not very happy with the Igbos. They felt left out of the scheme of power as far back as 1953. The Ibibio/efiks played the role the yorubas currently play to the north, they support Igbos' dominance of the east with the hope of a sit at the table. Azikiwe was a master of divide and conquer. He gave the Calabas their sit and they gave him their support. So, the Ijaws and Oginis felt isolated.
The civil war provided the opportunity they sort. Gowon divided the East into 3 states. The largest city of the East (Port Harcourt) and the major oil wells at the time were carefully carved into Rivers state- a state that was majority Ijaw. The Igbos in the new entity realised the dangers facing them as a result of posible Ijaw oppression. Their leader at the time called Elechi Amadi decided with the elders of the predominantly Ikwere-Igbo clan to dissociate themselves from Igbos in the heat of the civil war. That was it. When the war ended, the Ijaws and the newly formed Ikwere ethnic group refused to allow returning Igbos reclaim their property in PH.
In 1978 constitutional conference, many Igbo clans disillusioned by the Igbo identity and the place of Igbos in the new Nigeria decided to go autonomous. Ika, Ukwani and Ikwere clans of Igbo were listed as independent tribes in the constitution. Ikwere people, influenced by the Ijaws, will hardly sell land to an Igboman. Many Igbos from present Imo and Abia states decided to become Ikweres than Igbos.

As all these things were happening through the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, the ever gallant Yoruba media were taking note and resounding it through-out Nigeria that the once united, homogenous and powerful Igbos are no longer united or homogenous nay powerful. The politics of Senate Presidency in 1999-2007, which saw Igbos produce 5 SPs in 8 years did not help matters at all. It got to a sad point that even Igbos started doubting themselves.

This is the story.

But is it not funny that a people who helped themselves, dragging themselves out of poverty one person at a time after they were left with nothing but 20 pounds are said not to be united. But Akintola and Awolowo were united. Ife and modakeke were united, boko haram and kanuris were united, fulani and middlebelt farmers were united...etc

I hope that one day the Ikweres (especially), Ikas and Ukwuanis will come back to the fold and be proud Igbos again so that we can go back to our winning ways when Zik was our leader.

Shalom

Let them continue. They r the ones making Nnamdi Kanu popular and current. We all know the fight between Awolowo and Akintola etc. Every time, igbos r killed in the south west, and North. Sometimes in South west politics they fight dirty using oruka and burning house. They lack political tolerance but check the south east nothing like that. Since 1999 to date, South East is the only region that has political tolerance and multiple political parties in power without any violence etc. South East Anamosa has maintained one political party for years unlike the Yorubas who prostitution political parties. So no matter the angle you take it, the igbos r more united and politically sophisticated.

Everyone knows the Iboman is his own greatest enemy.... Your article stopped being interesting when you mentioned that ibos supported Nnamdi Azikwe to become eastern region president after losing to awolowo in the west, thereby edging out Oyo ita....for goodness sake why would nnamdi azikwe leave the premiership of his own region and be struggling with a yorubaman for the premiership of western region if not greed! He lost out and came back home and unfairly removed Oyo ita because he is not an iboman.
This is the real nature of the iboman and we are seeing the same thing since they lost elections in 2015 ,shameless people.
A premiere is a premiere...doesnt matter which region...so how is it igbo greed? Zik was a protege of the founder of NCNC...his early political base was the west so it was him believing in one nigeria without realising the inate tribalism in u guys.
If u say he unfairly removed Eyo Ita wat will u say to how Awolowo removed him? Stick to one narrative

Stop saying all these things you are saying. Even a blind man knows the Yorubas have been the most intelligent tribe since 1900 and it’s just plain ignorance to say the Igbos home key post pre-civil war coz of their intelligence.

What happened then is akin to what Buhari is doing now, ethic favoritism, in 50 years time the Fulanis will keep saying they are the most intelligent people also for holding key post in federal parastatals and etc.

The reason the Igbos are holding those post them is because of the treacherous nature of Azikwe and his betrayal to the southern hemogeny especially the Yorubas. He colluded with the illiterate North so as to be able to control the government from behind and made sure he installed his kinsmen in most of those post.

Isn’t that what the Nzeogwus did also? They killed all the leaders of other tribes and installed one of their own as the military president so as to maintain dominance over other people.

I still get mad anytime I remeber that Nigeria is working then , and the greedy Igbos truncated a working system to put us in the first mess Nigeria faced.

They even lied that they are trying to install Awolowo to justify their barbaric coup, meanwhile Awolowo was in prison and was released by Gowon a Northerner.

Do you guys even always think about your ancestors past? Do you ever question they motive for once? Do you even blame them for once?

I’ve told people that the Igbos taught the fulanis the science of dominance, it was first exhibited by Azikwe who thought he will rule a bigger Nigeria by opposing secession clause, also he exhibited it when he tried to become the premier of western region.

Think guys, please think!

A premier is not a premier that’s why they categorize them based on region. We are talking about the western region here.

In those days, a lot of people are not educated and to get information across to the Agbekoyas (Farmers) you have to speak in their language with good dialect.

How will an Igbo born (Azikwe) talk to the agbekoya and Kabiyesis, in English or flawed yourba dialect?

What Azikwe did is just what the fulanis are trying to do that we are all blaming them, it’s called dominance, greediness, and an affront on the Yoruba nation dignity.

Your reply shows why the Yorubas are the most intelligent, it’s not contestable and the Yorubas already lost count of the numerous glories.

You’re talking about jamb and waec to measure intelligence ? Haba bro.

Do you mean the waec where they carry jingbo without checkmating? Or when exactly does the average Igbo nation beat the Yorubas in those ratings?

When did WAEC or JAMB as a governing body release a statistics on the best regions? Are you talking about the figures that WAEC denied or which one?

In life there is what they call a self evident truth, even in your heart you know the Yorubas have always been the most intelligent coz the first call of an average Yoruba youth is education.

That manifested in the free education policy of the western region, the universities ranked best in Nigeria are majorly from the SW, SW owns the highest number of private universities in this country. We own the highest number of patents and researches. Even convenant university is ranked over all universities in the east in world ranking.

So what do you say is the measure of education again? WAEC?

the key posts igbos held was when the white man was incharge. It was simple...igbos were taken on the basis of merit and their believe in one nigeria then. Many igbos could speak either hausa or yoruba fluently then and were adequatelu educated to hold posts even outside their region. The 1st vc of UI was an igbo man...go figure. Was it zik that put him too? Akintola had no other person available to lead UI he had to choose an Igbo man....

@the bolded, that was a lie but let me educate you.

The white man never appointed Dike as the VC of UI. Balewa and his friend Azikwe did and he was appointed in 1963 as the first indigenous VC after Nigeria was already independent.

DO you even know the reason why Dike resigned? The western region had enough of the dominating attitude of Azikwe hiding under the banner of Balewa and they demanded his resignation then.

The Igbos then are akin to the Fulanis in their dominating attitude, Azikwe had to from the alliance with Balewa and he made sure he positioned the Igbos in strategic position since the Northerners never for once valued education much then. It's all a game of politics and betrayal.

The Igbos taught the Northerners the game of domination, and the Northerners used that template well enough. It is even evident in what Ahmadu Bello said then about the Igbos, what you cannot have you try to condemn, and most times you CANNOT accept what you demand from others.

Attached is the image of Balewa with Prof. Dike in 1963.

To even know the extent of the Yoruba intellect, it is evident in the list of the firsts professors in various discipline which are dominated by the Yorubas. Infact, if we had remained in the regional governmrnt, the Yoruba nation would have been the jewel of Africa by now going by what the western region was able to pioneer pre-civil war. Even our enemies knew the Western Region was the best region when everyone controlled their resources then in a regional government.
