How I bought from someone, a nairalander.

I checked vehicle with my mechanic. Car OK.

To make sure it's not stolen, we told seller to take us to the nearest police station to do change of ownership, he agreed. We entered police station. Seller gave all the vehicle paper to the DPO. This showed the seller was not afraid. Police charged us 10k.we agreed and told them we will get the money from ATM.

We left the station and paid the seller immediately.

. This is the only way and not all the OP stated. Car dealers are smarter.

If you want to buy nigeria used car,buy it from known owner. No story. If it is tokunbo, two options, get it directly from oversea or from a reputable dealer and verify the custom paper before paying.

No mind the OP! Every cretin wan claim expert. I mind the mod who pushed such a vague topic to FP.
malele:

Oga am a private seller, i work my 8am to 5pm and still sell cars.

u registered sellers do worst things, no need naming them.
pls who told u painting on car means that car is stolen?

let Us also know the marks on a stolen car, cause i dont know them if there is any.

The only correct statement u made there was checking the customs paper.

if u wan advertise ur biz do that without sounding crazy

Don't mind him and some people are praising the op for writing nothing.
Indeed the only point he made was the customs paper check.Other things he typed up there are rubbish

It can be quite a harsh scenario if you're arrested with a stolen car of this calibre. It's one of the reasons why I'm showing you how to avoid buying a stolen car in Nigeria. However, getting caught with a stolen foreign car doesn't happen often. This is because the car has crossed its mother base. But this doesn't immune you as the buyer from being dealt with when caught.
On the other hand, I do not recommend driving round a foreign car, if its source isn't genuine.
Let's see the things I do to avoid buying stolen cars in Nigeria. You're free to do the same thing because stolen cars aren't problem-free.

1. Request for Custom Papers
This should always be the first thing. In fact, if you carefully practice these processes, you could become an expert like me in buying cars for people.
Please, be careful with the papers a seller issues you with. Fake papers can be made to look original if You do not know. Also, perform VIN checks on the car, it's one way to check if it's stolen.

2. Consider Buying from an Authorized Car Dealer
If you have difficulties trusting private individuals, walk down to a car shop (authorized). Here, you don't have much to worry about, even though you still have to be watchful.

3. Try to Spot Fresh Paintings on the Car
If stolen car dealers think that they are wise, show them you're wiser. The moment you start assessing the entire car, fear will grip a guilty seller. This is why I stated in the preferred purchase guide list that you have to look like a pro.

4. Confirm the Overall Looks
Sometimes, there are certain marks left on stolen cars. The thieves may often times not notice much of them. It's now your responsibility to become a detector and figure these things out. Try not to be gullible no matter what or how things pan out.

Ultimately, you can be rest assured that you won't buy a stolen car if you adhere to this guide. I'm also glad with myself that I've shown you how to avoid buying stolen cars in Nigeria. I no longer want to hear those 'stolen cars" stories. Don't be a stolen car dealer, and don't be a stolen car seller. Be smart, if for nothing but for the mere fact that you're a Nigerian. Here's a country filled with smart citizens, so become one.

You ended up saying nothing

Yadi yadi yada rada rada

Painted car ko authorised dealer ni

Don't be like one nairalander who bought a bad car and in the process of pain, turned into a car dealer, please actually hit the streets and learn one or two things about car biz before you start teaching people about cars

Cheers

Well to the OP and all nairalanders wanting to know the secrets to not buying a stolen nigerian used vehicle.

Secret 1.

Ask for all the original papers of the vehicle(proof of ownership,Allocation paper, cmr, custom papers etc),if seller tells you he can't find the papers,my brother beware!

Secret 2.

On the proof of ownership certificate /allocation paper there is the original phone number of the person the vehicle was registered with.
Pick the number and call number to verify if truly he his the owner and if the vehicle is for sale.

Secret 3.

Take the CMR (central motor registry ) paper to the nearest police CMR office (kam Salem, obalende for lagos registered vehicle) to verify if the information tally with the original information on the vehicle.
If not,you can be told if the vehicle has been flagged a stolen.

Secret 4.

To avoid had I known,it's advisable to buy a Nigerian used vehicle directly from an owner you know very well than buying from a total stranger.

Car dealers are also thieves, some of them are receivers of stolen vehicles, some come back to steal it from the buyers many examples of dealers hiding spare key in the body of the car where they can easily use it to steal the vehicle

Stolen vehicle, OK! But when you guys begin to talk about accidented, flooded vehicles like its just some coffin or something that shouldn't be considered at all, it gives me a lot of concern. I happen to be close to folks who specialize in doing car bodyworks and repairs, and I find it quite enlightening, cos the picture I get from online buzzes is very far from actual realities on ground.
