LordofNaija:I won't fall for your tribalistic bait. Is Buhari majority of Nigerians? Or is he from Lagos like I said? |

Londonboyrep:Is Buhari not a Nigerian? |
Re: Why Do Nigerians Not Speak British English? by Londonboyrep(m): 2:06pm On Sep 27, 2019 |
LordofNaija:In the same vein Scots, Welsh, North Irish are all British from one country which is the United Kingdom yet they speak differently. The most universally acceptable accent is the London accent the same as the clearest form of English in Nigeria, in my opinion, is the Lagos accent. So again Buhari is not from Lagos and I've clearly used the Lagos English accent as my yardstick. I speak with a Nigerian Lagos accent and my colleagues can understand me clearly but they struggle to understand people from other parts of the UK even though they are all from the same country. 3 Likes |

Because Nigerians were not assimilated unlike what the French did during the colonial system The French assimilated the Brits associated all in all Nigerians not adopting the Queen's English starts from that point The English we know today is basic spoken English. Colonialists weren't as friendly as people may imagine because during the colonial era only the rich had the knowledge of English and it's applications I doubt an average layman knew more than good morning sir 1 Like 1 Share |

TissuePaper:Nigerians cannot and would never possess the competence to speak SBE ( standard British English) because it is simply not their mother tongue. English language has varieties across boundaries even in the western countries, hence it is highly improper and 'unlinguistic' to condescend on Nigerian variety of English (NE) with its Nigerian cultural nuances. 1 Like |

TissuePaper: Which language did you just say they adopted. I've you been to Cote de Ivoire b4 and hear their French? They're just like us. They speak broken French inundated with their local dialect. Simply put, I'm an English language teacher and I've told those that care to listen often, there are varieties of English. Every country will adapt it to suit its own situation. I'm sure you must be one of those Diction teachers trying effortlessly to force Queen English down pupil's throat just for your financial gains |
