internationalman:Sad reality, i studied computer science in UNIUYO, so i can releate. But i thank God for the internet, through which i learnt coding and was introduced to the immortal world of blogging and ecommerce which i make a very decent living from today. If you want o be a computer scientist, study it outside Nigeria. That is when you will know that Most compter analyst are welled paid than medical professonals. |

My advicE go for computer science! but don't expect to be a certified scientist when you graduate without going out to seek training in any field concerning computer science.... school will teach you theory while you pick the design practical knowledge outside. Back in my institution days I taught my same senior lecturals on how to develop seriess of website i decided not to charge them any amount because I knw we go still meet for CGPa matta still yet them pay me for my services... not to talk of students... teaching Dem programs helping them with assignment all money involved... choosing c/s is not d priority but what u become of it |

internationalman:A computer science student 3rd year in the university could not code a website. He was flawed by a 15 years old girl with 3 weeks internship experience, who fixed all the errors the website was generating, and it was able to run smoothly. What are our universities turning into? I was shocked to hear that they are still been taught how to program in obsolete languages like FOTRAN, BASIC ETC. |

Maj196:You said I shouldn't ask you why, but pls I really want to know why you would choose computer science over computer engineering. |

MountainView:a very complete definition. computer engineer, givs you an advantage to be a coren registered engineer,if you need,it enable to work as an electrical/electronic engineer.if you like yourself, you better go for computer engineering. have you heard of software engineering before? thats a branch of coputer engineering. if you even go into programing, you will be doig that as an engineer not as a mr. |

Silas6:Computer science has more prospect than computer engineering. Forget about what those up there are saying. Coupled with a vast programming knowledge you are good to go. |

First ask yourself this questions, am I good at solving problems with calculation and idea? Or am good at fixing things?? Then you will know the answer to your post sir. Because computer science deal with software, how you can solve problems with codes and programs and so on. While computer eng. Deal with hardware, by replacing damage components with new one or fixing the damage components.... You can still make more research on google sir. |

Maj196:That just it. There is a lot in com sci. Graphics design, web design, data analysis, IT analysis, Intern analysis, software coding freelance, digital marketing and so on sir. My friend just discovery another job through com sci. |

ibawon:would any professional course teach you mathematics of computers or theory or the design behind it? Some of the programs or hardware you see were invented by people who understood the theory behind it, how then do you want Nigerians to compete globally in the ICT world, if we dont go to a university were we learn the theory behind computing? |

Silas6:As far as university courses go (in Nigeria at least), it is the same thing. Whether they call the department Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, etc, they all teach the same courses - Algorithms, Data structures, Computer Architecture and Hardware, Programming, Database management systems, Artificial intelligence, Compiler theory etc. If you want to make a decision on what to study, then instead of comparing "science" vs "engineering", compare the schools offering the courses and see which one have better standards and reputation in the field. The name of the school/course on your degree is not as important in the software industry as in other fields, so what really matters is that you don't go to a school where you end up wasting four years of your life just cramming textbook without learning any thing that will actually help you get a job. |

CodeTemplar:what are you saying.. How can a computer science students not know how to operate a computer |

internationalman:Must a mechanical engineering grad know how to drive a car or a vehicle ( truck, bike, tricycle etc) for him to be considered competent as a graduate? No. Computer science is different from MIS (Management and Info Systems) and even at that MIS isn't about computer operation. As I speak to you, new programs are being written in unique ways in their thousands and it will be gross ignorance for you to on expect a grad of 4-5 years ago to know what is being produced today. Even old software like Windows OSes and Co get updated often and there is no course like computer operation in a university system for this simple reason. Please stop basing your points or expectation on empty ideas. What you suggesting is like making operations of machines a course for Mech Engrs. How will they adapt when new machines with different controls get churned out after their graduation? You goofed. |

Engineering like they say is hardware I know alot of people that regret studying computer science. You can learn everything about computer science at home. Computer Engineering, you build circuits, work with logic gates. While computer science, its just Web design, graphics design, data base, word, and a few maths, don't be deceived. |
