Sex for marks is a popular phenomenon in Nigerian universities/higher institutions of learning. It gained notoriety recently with the incessant harassment and sexual exploitation of female students by randy male lecturers. the British broadcasting corporation (BBC) recently aired a documentary on the issue and it sparked a national outcry.

I was not surprised with the documentary but what came as a surprise to me is the hypocrisy of many Nigerians through their reactions to the documentary. Sex for marks and other forms of sexual exploitation of ladies in higher institutions in Nigeria is not a new phenomenon. In fact, Eedris Abdul Kareem sang a song titled "Mr Lecturer" in the early 2000s that addressed the issue. It's an age long practice in Nigerian higher institutions. It's proudly Nigerian.

Sex for marks takes two forms: one is comically referred to as STD ( Sexually Transmitted Degree), here, female students throw themselves sexually at male lecturers for better grades in their individual courses. The sex is initiated by the female students for academic favour. The other form is the most controversial, here, the male lecturers sexually exploits struggling female students. They prey on female students that are struggling academically and sexually exploit them by offering them better grades in exchange for sexual relationship with them.

No matter the forms this "Sex for Marks" phenomenon may take, it needs to be discouraged in Nigerian universities/higher institutions because it's an academic corruption. It's an unethical practice that promote mediocrity and sexual perversion/exploitation in Nigerian universities/higher institutions. All hands must be on deck to put an end to this corrupt and immoral practice in Nigerian higher institutions of learning.
