The renewed search for commercial quantity hydrocarbon in the inland basins of northern Nigeria received a boost in 2016 following President Muhammadu Buhari's directive to the NNPC to resume exploration activities, especially at the Chad Basin.

.

The immediate past GMD of the NNPC had indicated that while the international oil companies, which previously explored the basin through Kolmani River 1 well drilled down to less than 9,000 feet, the corporation would go as deep as 14,500 feet in the Kolmani River II well.

"When we read the data, we observed that Shell did not go deep enough. So we have come here based on the 3-dimensional seismic and other subsurface reviews and studies we have done. At the moment, we are looking deep down, we are looking at kilometres below the ground, and nobody has gone there. It is only drilling that would confirm whether there is any resource there, as well as confirm the professional judgement we have. So, in terms of volumes, types and all that, let us wait...

Mixed reactions have trailed the discovery, as energy experts and environmental analysts in separate interviews said it would be against national interest if the NNPC continues the exploration if what was discovered is non-commercial.

is not in commercial quantity.

"We just ask for sincerity from the NNPC, if what they have seen there is not in commercial quantity they should stop that exploration and stop wasting public resources on exploration activities,"

Faniran said: "I believe there is a threshold for us to know what is commercial or not because at the time you are going to know what you will spend bringing out the quantity that you have, if it doesn't tally with how much you are going to get then it is not in commercial quantity. "

The National Coordinator, National Coalition on Gas flaring and oil spills in the Niger Delta, Rev. Father Edward Obi, said, "Exploration for oil and gas in the northern part of Nigeria has been going on for many years and budget after budget, allocations were made for that exploration to continue yet ought to no avail..

They should continue.

It is one way of creating job up north. Even if the fund is not spent on such unprofitable venture, it will still not impact me so why should I worry

Oil discovery is everywhere in the world excepts if the land never existed before dinosaurs reign

Are you an earth scientist?

It is evident you are not.

I'll be amazed if you attended a higher institution.

Seems oil is one energy source that has come to stay. Be that as it may, I am starting to think this oil is just a distraction for us to be successful in Nigeria.
Look at it, there are other sources of energy that are constantly available. Eg wind, water and solar energy.
All the funds that's being pumped into these oil exploration could have been pumped into Agricultural also. But every house hold and tribe in Nigeria is bothered oil when they never even seen crude oil before

There is no oil of commercial value in the north and if there was the cost of mining processing and evacuating it will make the cost per barrel unprofitable

Am aware but this one is a bad mistake because Politics, rather than sound economics underlies his compulsive oil search..

Mr prof emeritus, are you aware that this wasteful excercise has gulped over 340 $ million and an additional 27 billion since 2015 alone??

No, they really shouldn't. We are all praying they find oil. That discovery would be the biggest blessing. They may decide to separate from the rest of us. Please do not stop it.

The federal government having done its bit these past 40 years, the government should leave the search for crude oil in the North to the private sector. And if they so wish, the northern states should continue to commit their own resources to realise their ambition of becoming oil producing states. The danger now is that good money that would have been invested in promoting the real economic potential of the North – agriculture, mining, manufacturing – is frittered away on a hopeless political venture.
oil has poisoned our politics, fuelled a civil war, generated insurgencies; distorted the economy and created a rentier state.
Buhari should end the wild goose chase. It is for all the wrong reasons. It is so puzzling why the President is so obsessed with oil discovery in the North at all costs. Nigeria’s development failure has made it a common illustration of the “resource curse” – Instead of wasting millions of dollars in the endless search for hydrocarbons in the North, the government will help the region better by creating a policy regime that is conducive to the accumulation of productive know-how or economic capabilities

And so?

You think oil exploration is cheap?

Do you think every well sunk in the ND is successful?

It is not a wild goose chase.

Should commercial finds be made in the North it is for the best.

Even if they find ten times the oyel, they ain’t going nowhere! If it had been in the 60s, then maybe there’s a slim chance, but not now!

What i find perplexing is that the federal gov’t under Buhari isn’t interested in the proven oil and gas deposits in Anambra, but instead are searching for a needle in a haystack way up north!
