Hi bro, great work for your meaninful contribution. Can you help point me sample sql database/files one can download for practice? Will appreciate.
After downloading SQL, search for adventure works 2022, Adventure works DW2022, adventure works LT2022.

Download them all. They're all sample database which you can import to Power BI or any other similar program and work with.

All downloaded. issue now is how to query data using SELECT & FROM in SQL. Also, all files ended with .bak. is that the proper format for sql files? thanks in advance. here is a snapshot;

To query data using SELECT and FROM in SQL, you need to follow these steps:

Write create view. For instance if you want to create customer table, (write customer_table as) remember to but your underscore to connect both together.

Select * (the asterisk means you're selecting the whole table) if you don't want the whole table you can just write out the columns you want to work with.

From dim customer. Dim customer means that you want to create a customer table from dim customer. You'll hold it and drag it to your from, then highlight everything and execute.

As for the bak you asked means backup. Adventure works files are basically backups for the database hence the bak.

[quote author=Jp96 post=113217192]Morning bosses. I started my data analysis journey on Monday. I'm taking free courses on coursera and udemy.
I'm learning excel, power bi, sql and python in that order.
I've downloaded all the softwares on my laptop except for sql, I don't understand something.
To learn sql, is it that I have to download ms sql or mysql on my laptop??
[/
How is it going? I I'm interested in venturing into data analysis.
Any advice for me.

To increase your chances of owning an Up work account use a business email and ensure your profile and skills section is very rich

There's nothing special about opening an up work account. It's just like opening a LinkedIn account.

Just write a detailed description of your skills in your profile. Sell yourself very well to prospective employers and you might just get a job.

Ejiod:
A typical day in my 1st place as a data analyst was quite simple:
Tools used were
Python
Pandas
Matplotlib & Seaborn
Plotly
Excel
MySQL
PowerBI
ArcGIS.
Power point
Google sheet
Google Datastudio

A typical day as an analyst. You are always starring at data to get sense of what you would do. Your boss is on you asking you to do comparative analysis between cohorts. Correlation was the order of the day. Then PowerBI wasn’t active then, Matplotlib, seaborn and plotly was the main visualization tool.
Every Tuesday we always had meeting to present data and how the firm is doing. Your presentation skill must be classy and you have to master your data if not questions from novice and expert can throw you off balance. Such meeting last for 2hours. You just have to be prepared.

Guys i need advice from you gurus. I want to get a tech skill(s) to make more money in this country. Problem is, I have zero knowledge of any of the skills. Can I pull through? I'm a graduate. Which skill is best to start with considering I'm an amateur? I intend to get a laptop by September. A friend is advising me to look for a tech school to register and learn, is it wise? Any input will greatly help please, I'm very determined to learn please

Follow this guideline

Step1 - get a laptop and ensure that the laptop can be upgraded in the future
Step 2 - what are you good at?, or what can you do effortlessly, you can build a technical skill around it. Alternatively, you can build your career around what you studied in school. There is no single career that does not use IT skills. Do a little research.
Step 3 - Do computing fundamentals course. This will help you understand how things work in the computing world. You will understand basic terms and terminologies also.
Step 4 - Decide on your learning style. Recorded videos, E-Books, 1 on 1, Community, project based etc
Step 5 - Do another fundamental course in the area of your choice that aligns with the career you intend to pursue. For example, if you want to do a Data related course, then do Data fundamentals. This course should teach you basic terms and terminologies used in the data ecosystem.
Step 6 - Decide the platforms to learn from. There are good ones that are very. Khan Academy, freeCodeCamp, etc
Step 7 - Make sure what you are learning can provide a business solution, that is how the money will come
Step 8 - Get a very good mentor to oversee your progress and guide you.

shalom!!!

Has anyone here gotten their hands on PyExcel.
It's literally like working in a Python environment while you are still in Excel.

Interesting, this great thread seems to be fading.

For me, it all started here, and now I’m a BI developer working outside Nigeria. Thanks to Ejiod and other early contributors.

I wil say one thing, Data analytics or Business Intelligence is not just about dashboards. In the Nigeria tech space, I have noticed that people seem to overlook data modelling (Fact & dimensions, star schema, snowflake) which is part of the most important knowlege when working with data and it's likely to come out during interviews. As a data analyst, your data won't always come from a single table, you could have 10 tables with million of rows just for a report, how do you connect them? To that effect, I will encourage new comers to glance through this topic as they navigate their journey in the field.

Having said that, would it be possible to form a small group of BI Developers, Data Analysts/scientists and Data Engineers who are currently working in the field?

It could be helpful to have like-minded individuals to discuss work-related topics, career journeys, and new opportunities with.

I will be mentioning a few people below who have contributed to this thread in one way or another and who seem to be in the field. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts:

Great contribution. Congratulations on your data role.
Yeah data modeling is too important to ignore in BI. It is central to any data analytics discussion.
In fact a BI guru says:
You don't build a report, you build a model.

I do emphasise to my mentees that creating relationships between fact and dimension tables is something they can't do without if they want to grow in this field. That said, I believe having an accessible community of like minds will be great, especially as we restrategize our data career in the new year, and also help data newbies grow.
Let's keep growing together

I remember peeping at this thread sometime in 2021 or so. At that time I was still at a job earning 65k AUD here in Australia, which at that time was like entry level or graduate level salary.

After seeing this thread, I decided to work on my skills. Note that I already had a bit of knowledge about SQL, Tableau and python.
However, I began learning and improving my python skills for automating things and then gradually started learning how to use it to ingest and analyse data.

I spent about 3 months building different data projects and learning many things along the way. Experience is really the best teacher, you learn how to and how not to do things.

Back then, there was no chatgpt, so had to look up and read documentation manually.

I visited kaggle and saw many data science projects and started to learn. Then proceeded to build my own machine learning projects.

I packaged all these projects and put them in my cv and started applying for jobs.

I got 5 job offers in the space of 1.5 months. Did many interviews, can't even remember how many.

Fast forward to today, I've grown and had multiple promotions - now earning close to 150k aud.

My advice to those starting out is to not spend too much time on tutorials. The best way I learnt quickly was to apply the knowledge by actually building stuff.

Apart from the technical skills, you also need need presentation skills, people skills (very important in the Australian corporate culture), story telling skills, etc.

I can't go in-depth. But like other people have mentioned, never give up. In those 3 months I spent building things, I never went out. I only go to the office, come back home and continue from where I stopped. I even used to take my personal laptop to work so I could continue learning and building during my lunch break.

It paid off big time!!!

Hmmm congratulations boss, I have not really been following the thread since I transitioned from Data thingy to Backend development, I learnt Django, then Dart/flutter but no opportunity until I was referred to a fintech company in order to work on Linux POS Terminals using c programming language, that didn't go far as well, I had to transitioned to Java backend, and that is what am doing till today using Spring framework...

Well done bro, how has the Java backend been, are there opportunities for it, does it really worth learning it when compared to other backend like Node.JS , Python etc.
