Also, IVF isn't a magic bullet. For many copules, it might take several rounds and years before they even get a succesful pregnancy...

Also, once knew a copule in the early part of my working life. Tried many rounds of IVF over 10 years...zero, then the woman eventually got pregnant nauturally....

It annoys me that they won't aknowledge the fact that God did it through the work of technology so as enlighten the ignorant church members.

Well a very very tiny percentage of black men and women ...less than 1%.....go abroad to deliver their children.

The thing is, it is darn too expensive.

Most of us have them here at home. Even the rich.

One percent doth not represent a whole populaiton.

Medical miracle
not all those who gave birth this way went through a medical means. At least I know of 2 like that...one had twins while the other had one in their late 50s. To refute all doubts...as some may think the wife went to sleep with another man secretly...these babies all resembled their dads. The twins were a replica of their dad.

You are right

There should be a balance and interaction between science and spirituality

It would be beneficial to their congregation if they could forfeit a little of their privacy and explain to them what happened (if it was not a natural birth)

I know what you are thinking...but the reason why our maternal mortality rate is bad has a lot to do with access to care than quality of care. Some women are too poor to access care , or live to far from a goood hospital or PHC center, or a CHEW. And to be frank, we don't have enough doctors and nurses, talkless of specialists.

Also, part of the fault lies in the patients too. A woman gets pregnant, and won't register for antenatal....and then turns up with serious pregnancy complications that would have been detected earlier and stopped in antenatal.(And those are women who can afford it. A friend of my mum died because she didn't turn up on time to hospital, and she could afford care!)

The copule here can certainly afford good care here in Nigeria. And there are many good hospitals that can take care of the pregnancy here. They went abroad more because they want American citizenship for their child (which would be very useful in the long run for university admission...leg up).

You are right about all of that. Some people can be very lackadaisical with their general health and not just in pregnancy.

At the same time the inferior quality of care in some places during such a critical time can't be understated either.

A lot of women and children have died needlessly because of neglect by staff and not enough specialist knowledge/ facilities. So if one has the chance to escape with his life, he wouldn't choose to forget himself just to be patriotic

Are you sure the couple here haven't lost a baby in Nigeria before? Some cases need state-of-the-art and sensitive equipment. And not just "good care", but excellent to the point of spending millions. Their doctor could even have advised them to go abroad. 24 years can never be a joke
