The purpose is to scare living daylight out of children.

We have one masquerade that carries machete in our village and another one that carries cane. They chase and scared me so much, I was traumatised sotay I start running at sight of any masquerade even if it's dancing masquerade.

There is one day I was catching hypertension because I saw Uncle JB coming toward me and thought it was Ekpo.

Spirits have no form. If they are ancestors the spirits masquerade represents some of their attributes like face weapons etc. If they are animals then likewise . If they are forces of nature then aggressiveness etc as well as the costumes. The costumes also may represent the attire of the ancestral people etc. It is all symbolism. The masquerade gives material life to a spirit (invisible force). It also helps to identify the different spirits worshipped in each realm or to differentiate between two spirits based on the traditional creativity of the ancestors.
