Achikwu I believe is found in almost all old Aguata LGA. It's rarity is due to the fact that it doesn't come out in the day and even at night when it emerges, all light source are switched off. It's retinue are mostly old men with lots of spiritual powers. It's said to possess spiritual powers to the level of having a woman barren for life if she sees from wherever hidden position she is. Have you ever seen a picture of Achikwu or even know how it looks? This will tell you how scarce it is.
not only in old aguata, we have them arround other parts of anambra like enugu ukwu n some other places. Most of them perform in the 9t but that of Ekwulobia performs during the day. Ogbaagu is another type of masqurade that performs in the night in Ekwulobia but its very deadly. Women whom sees them can go barren for years.

The bottom line is that they are two words identical in sound and spelling but different in meaning. And as a matter of proper information, should have been used in the proper context here. All the same, enjoy the thread.

I don't understand what you posted.

You said it means warrior, lion there.

I said it means warrior, warrior spirit in Igboland.

Where is the difference then?

In Igbo culture, the masquerade (Mmanwu) embodies the spirit and human worlds. The mystique surrounding the masquerade is one of the key components of the Igbo culture that survived Western influences,

It is generally believed in the Igboland that the masquerade is a spirit which springs from the soil. The masquerades are classified into categories based on specialization. Each masquerade possesses particular attributes (warrior-like prowess, mystical powers, youthfulness, and old age) and specializes in one or more skills (dancing skills, acrobatics, and other ritual manifestations).

Masquerading may involve one person team or a team made up of instrument players, vocalists, dancers, masquerade advisers, and the masquerade itself. Most masquerades are covered from head to toe with some piece of clothing or/and bamboo rafters, a wooden mask is worn over the face. The mask will vary depending on the type of masquerade and the place of origin within the Igboland. Some masks are designed to be beautiful, intimidating or downright sinister. Most masquerades claim to have some mystical powers and are constantly competing to see which one has the most mystical powers, whenever they appear together especially at village squares or funerals. The masquerade appears during traditional celebrations, funerals and festivals especially the new yam festival.

Below are the Top 25 Most Popular Igbo Masquerades

1. Ijele Masquerade

Ijele is a special and most popular Igbo masquerade and the largest mask system ever to enter the history of the world masking tradition. Ijele has its origin from the norther part of Igbo land (Anambra and Enugu State, Nigeria). known as the biggest Masquerade in Sub-Saharan Africa, Ijele was listed in the UNESCO Archives as an intangible cultural element in need of urgent safeguarding.

Ijele masquerade is the King of all Masquerades and as such has 45 different other masquerades perform on top of it in the olden days. Presently, the 45 masquerades are represented by the 45 figurines seen on top of Ijele. The myth and size of Ijele is wholesome as every aspect of life is depicted on Ijele. It is the climax of all masquerades hence performs alone and mostly last.

Achukwu Ekwulobia is still the most popular. People from Isuofia, Nanka, Aguluzoigbo, Oko do visit Ekwulobia for their achukwu.

Afuzo Isuofia, Ugwueke, Oko are not what they used to be back in the days. Only Afo-udo nanka still bubbles with activities due to second-tier masquerades and football.

Yagazie broda. Nanka has managed to preserve most of their masquerade/culture from being eroded by Christianity. I think the reason is because in one of their villages called agbiligba-nanka, they practice both very strong African -traditional religion and also some orthodox Christianity. The notorious Dada-Nanka is from agbiligba...so are most of their very formidable and scary masquerades like mkpologwu (pronounced as roots) they used to have others called ‘Udo’ (rope) and okpolompi...you’d see these between Nwagu and Afor-udo...mkpologwu comes out once in a blue moon. I think you can compare it to ‘Ajofia’ Nnewi...just to mention that nanka still has their Alusi Ududonka. Most towns have destroyed theirs.
Isuofia has their Agaba masquerade from Akulu village. This village is famous for their strong blacksmithing tradition. Almost every family here has someone who can forge metals. There are some very scary masquerades too from umueze-Isuofia but I’m not sure if those still come out. They’d normally come out during Iri-ji festival back in the days when Igwe Ezeabasili was alive and on the throne.

My brother it's very terrible the mentality of our Igbo, maybe i would say it's one of the unfortunate ripple effects of the war but the war is almost 50 years in history, we really need to enlighten and correct this worrisome narrative.

Im from Nando, i grew up in Onitsha and Asaba, i have been to all parts of Igbo land and i not seen any reason whatsoever why i would consider myself a "Pure" Igbo because I'm from Anambra and Igbo another guy is "not pure Igbo" because he is from Bonny or Agbor. It doesn't just make sense how our people think.
