I totally agree with the writer.
The border closure was as a result of a failure in the system. But rather than address that failure, by purging the agencies maning our borders for sabotaging our economy, government rather decides to treat the symptoms rather than the ailments. These questions would suffice:
1. Who is responsible for policing the borders - The customs
2. Who gets bribed to let smuggling happen- The customs
3. Who loses revenue - Government
4. Who gets richer when the borders are shut?
The answer is obviously the customs.

A new one argument was introduced during the week, from China. Communist China closed its borders for so long that by the time it reopened it had garnered economic and manufacturing muscle to have no need for importation and grow the muscle to take the global market by storm!
This manner of reasoning is warped. When did China close its borders? How do we compare the socio-economic rationale of that closure with the present day two-way politico-economic regime in China? What did China do to reset its economy to compete in 21st Century arena? Is our country thus equipped to copy them? Maybe it is and wailers aren’t privy to that policy document.

Above is what they fail to understand.

China only closed their border against EUROPEANS and JAPANESE who were a threat to their sovereignty. Not just China but Japan also did so for 200 years against Europeans who, again, were a threat to their sovereignty but they allowed Netherlands. Why? Because the Dutch are good people and were never a threat to them.

So, the argument of closing our border because China once did so is very stupid argument.

China only closed their border in order to disconnect themselves from western and Japanese IMPERIAL CONTROL. They earlier built a wall, though, against the Mongols and all those people invading their lands from the North to colonize them. The very people that China closed their border against in order to develop is the same people we welcome here with fanfare. Yet, we're stupid enough to present China as an argument for border closure in Nigeria.

Let God bless you for me, cuz you said my mind.

Here is my problem with the article here.

The guy praises Canadians for obeying their rules.....and links it to their leaders....leading by example.

Well, the issue is, leaders come from the same old followers.

The truth is, Nigerians know the rules, and refuse to follow them. We bribe Customs officers, attack them when they refuse to let us through with our illegal goods, and then we complain when Customs drastically closes the borders.

Millions of people have over the last 20 years of our democracy willingly voted for corrupt polticans from both parties, and when some of us complain, we are laughed at. And then when things don't work...what did you exepct. We replaced PDP with a APC that is just their twin....an exact replica.

Nigerians don't pay their bills, jump traffic lights, jump queues, etc...don't do things right...and then they complain when they produce leaders who do the same thing.

So, what do you expect when Nigerians are a people who don't do the right thing? You expect them to produce leaders who would do the right thing.

As a university student living off campus , out of about 20-30 students living in a student dorm, only 10 of us were contributing to the light bill. The rest refused.

Abeg....you cannot expect a mango tree to start producing apples.

P.S Canadians are crossing the broder into the USA for medical care. So, Canada is as bad as Nigeria, eh? (Sarcasm fully intended).

P.S 2...El Midgeto Rufai...made a promise to enroll his kids in primary school in his state. And when he tried to take measures to actually improve the schools, by removing underqulified teachers, some of whom could not communicate in English, guess who opposed him?> Nigerians. And Kaduna schools are back to square one.

Confused and incompetent president.

What happened to import substitution strategy.

You don't just close border without boosting local production and technology.
continue making noise on nairaland, don't go and farm. By the time you see rice farmers riding on Lamborghini you will start regretting while it is too late.

Borders remain closed!! All of you hungry writers paid by rice smugglers to discredit the border closure can go suck a dick* any one with a brain can tell ur intentions from the stupid comparisons u gave.

Every country and people has wht works for it... if Nigerians can't love their country and be patriotic without being forced then by all means Buhari should fvking whoop their asses in line.

You say Immigration and Customs have failed ... agreed.
A loop has been created for Immigration and Customs to get their shits together (no one said the borders will be closed for ever ). So what is the fuss about?

Fg is trying to fix the immigrations and customs but you still no gree! angry

To all ur likes.... whether u like it or not we must develop.. by fire and by force! Enough of the "Chaos" , Law and order must be established for a system to function.

sad I like this border closure if the end result will benefit Nigerians
the end result is not to benefit Nigerians..it is to enrich those that have invested in rice farming.... If the plan is to benefit Nigerians why did the farmers increase the price of local rice? So those that have been buying local rice will now have to pay more...

As a real niggarrr
I don't do politics

But one thing i love about this government is their ability to

Bring treasury single account( although this was Jonathan's idea)
And integrated payroll system( same Jonathan's idea)

Including this border closure

There is always light at the end of the tunnel

Las las we go dey alright

Like i will always say Nigerians don't really hate corruption
They only hate the fact that they are not the one carrying out the corruption

Shouldn't you also love the way this government has reduced your country's foreign reserve:https://punchng.com/external-reserves-sink-to-five-month-low-of-43-67bn/

These are all symptoms of a bigger behemoth of a problem. Let's first define our union as a country by asking salient questions on how we got here.

The problem lies in our history: our so-called founding fathers tried to warning us because they anticipated these ugly developments.

The writer speaking out of a biased ignorant mindset, China closed its border for forty years to develop their economy, I don't know how you expect to progress if you keep taking money from your house to buy the same thing your mother is selling, the border closure will actually have a ripple effect which will develop the nations economy, farmers make more money therefore expands his operations which means more job opportunity, more disposable income to put his children in school to produce enlightened citizen, more money to buy cloths, shoes, build house, buy vehicles, etc, then as more people go into farming or farms are expanded there will be surplus rice, tomatoes etc and the price will have to come down due to law of demand and supply, meanwhile all the money stay withing the country and will get to everyone one way or the other because everyone involve in the food production value chain will have more purchasing power, crime will reduce because there are more job opportunities, is this not better than to take Nigerian money to another country helping them to build their economy while we struggle here, necessity is the mother of invention, you will see people actually finding solution to what we need here if they can't get it elsewhere and before you know it we are self sufficient, we must jettison this feed me mentality and everything outside is better mindset,
