What is the need for being a member of a professional body in a lawless country like Nigeria, where there is no code of conduct in any discipline? Accountants, like the judiciary, the airlines and the police are the same as the politicians, lawless , unregulated and unstructured.

ICAN is NOT saturated

The economy is what is dead

Producing less than 4000 chartered accountants annually for a country but like Nigeria is paltry

And to think people think it's too much is just ridiculous

My candid advice to ICAN is that they might be right on moral ground to suspend or delist a member. But i reality, they need to apply a moral suasion approach in generating money and thread with great caution. If they succeed in this, more professional enemies will rise up against ICAN in future and a lot of sabotaging activities will be working against ICAN.The economy i bad,no job and pressure is everywhere.ICAN is a listineng organisaton...

These dues should be made very affordable for every member working or not to be able to pay.

Actually they are affordable. About N12,500 annually... just over 1K monthly. Oftentimes the employer pays for the member. Some people just don't like paying unless they are compelled. Well, ICAN has started compelling.

My name is there.

I have not paid my membership dues in more than 6 years. It's a very small money (less than 100k) which will even be reimbursed by my employers but I just did not take it seriously. I just needed their cert to add to my CV, I have not been doing the subsequent financial obligation of a member.

Not good.

This action will make me take it seriously.
Sir Jarus has an ACCA, so ICAN might be too important again.

Did they not pay huge amounts in the first place to get the cert?

Why bill them that much again yearly?

The problem about acquiring certifications is the issue of dealing with yearly dues especially when you are yet to secure a job. Man go first chop before he considers certification. If you die of hunger after paying dues, who go come use the certificate.

They should extend the grace period to December ending. Personally, I can’t afford to pay all my accumulated arrears right now because I have other commitments. However, I can pay by first week of December.

Whatever the case, delisting over 14k members is not the way to go. The institute should continue engaging the members to make them see why it’s important to pay annual subscription promptly. Many members feel that they are not getting much benefits from the institute and so can’t be paying for no benefits.

There is also the issue of accountability on the part of council members. ICAN make so much money and members don’t know how the funds are expended.

Maybe they will. Problem is; what of those whose commitments can only permit them to pay by the 1st week of January? Or 2nd week of February? ICAN obviously cannot accomodate everybody's convenience.

I think they have seen now; clearly.

The qualification itself is a benefit. Only an ICAN member (and ANAN now) can audit financial statements of a registered company in Nigeria; as well as there being great scope and training in many fields ranging from IT to Consultancy among other things. ICAN is also currently an IFAC member and one can use the ICAN membership to register freely with most chartered accountant bodies in West Africa and some others abroad. ICAN is not obliged to guarantee jobs for its members. No professional institute does that.

ICAN publishes its audited annual statements on its website.
