There are other products we have comparative advantage of and we are not talking about them or even trying yo take advantage of the advantage we have. Cassava, cashew, millet, Cocoa, sesame seed, Sorghum, even yam etc are products we can use to earn huge foreign exchange but because we CONSUME rice that we don't really produce then we can close border for it.

Closed border, even those that want to export/import other products are caught up and its only rice we talking about.

I just pray our Government can sustain this closure for at least two or more years then I will affect our economy positively

I hope when the border is eventually opened it would not be business as usual. Rice that is now 28k will not come down or probably come down to 16k which was what it was before the closure and all we would have achieved was to just punish ourselves.

But, being self-sufficient rice production reduces the impact on our FX reserves. A country that can feed itself can develop itself.

The next focus should be banning fuel imports and getting the refineries to work after 5 years of Buhari holding the ministry of petroleum porfolio there should be no excuse why Nigeria refineries are still working at 10 % capacity.

I don't have a lot of issues with the boarder closure as long as it is temporary and when reopened it is well equipped to follow the set out rules by Ecowas convention. There needs to be a round table too discourage Benin, Togo and Ghana from allowing indiscriminate importation of goods that are clearly meant to be dumped in the Nigerian Market. That goes for every good not just Rice and Cars. I am surprised that frozen chicken and Turkey has not come up in the discussion.

Since we are taking about boarder closure to enhance the local economy, I would like the presidency to consider taking his 15 day vacation in Ogudu or Tinapa or any other resort in Nigeria rather than taking our hard earned Fx to London to rest. That too is as bad as importing RICE. Mr. President took power as a sick man and thank God he has fully recovered after spending probably what Ogun and Enugu states spends on its entire population's healthcare needs in hospitals in London where his money is not needed. Thousands of Doctors have fled Nigeria for greener pastures because the government continues to fail them.

Perfecting the process of production and distribution should be attained to reduce the impact of a sudden border closure. Just waking up and closing the border is insensitive and not well thought out.

Banning fuel imports is the right thing to do but it only becomes the right thing if the refineries are at least working.

Imagine if tomorrow we wake up and fuel importation is banned and dangote refinery we are all supposedly banking on is incomplete.

Did they stop anyone from using sea and Land borders?

China did not do, for many years in the 2000's, the country ran a big trade deficit. If its borders were closed, how can you run a trade deficit? If China closed its borders, how then did it become the world's largest exporter of goods? Import duty on cars into China is 15%.

I agree with your expressions of hope. If the closure is sustained for some years or perpetually, it’ll be to our advantage in the long run. It’s painful now though. But we hope it’ll be well sustained.
