Nigerian Satellites: Time For Commercialisation - Experts comments by AIT / 5 years ago / Science and Tech Three years after Nigeria SAT-2 and Nigeria SAT-X were launched scientists believe the projects have intervened in critical areas of the nation's economy and are therefore calling for full commercialization of the services to further boost economic growth. Experts took this position at the third anniversary of the space revolution in Nigeria. Nigeria took a giant step in space, science and technology in 2011 with the launch of Nigeria SAT-2 and Nigeria SAT-X in response to the economic and security of the country as a practice in other developed nations. 3 years after the launch of the satellite, the National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA says it is not a waste as it has made impact in critical areas. Seidu Mohammed, Director General NASRDA said, "We have made available, images to over 18 universities covering the whole country. “Our satellite was part of the efforts to recover the Malaysian plane. Our satellite was also part of the mapping in the Amazonian basin, we were part of the campaign over the desert in Saudi Arabia and several other international disasters across the world." As cheering as this development may sound, experts at the gathering challenged Nigeria scientists to take a bolder step by building local satellites in the area of job creation, reducing broadband costs and the current level of consumption among wealth players will be reduced. Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe, guest speaker said, "I think it is a work in progress, this is not a finished product. This is something they will continue to work on. So Nigerians should be in a position in very few months to begin to appreciate and actually use this satellites.” 1 Like
