Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has commiserated with traders affected by a fire outbreak at the Super Plaza in Surulere, Lagos.

The mall on Akerele Street was gutted by fire on Wednesday.

In a message posted on social media, the politician who represents Surulere 1 Constituency in the National Assembly wrote: “My thoughts and prayers are with traders in Surulere Plaza, Akerele in my constituency over the fire outbreak that gutted the complex this evening.”

The building formerly known as Super Cinema houses many shops and churches including Fountain Hall, Dominion City Worship and Omega Fire Ministries.

Director-General of Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said preliminary investigation conducted on site indicated that the fire resulted from an electrical surge in one of the shops before escalating to other parts of the plaza.

“No loss of life nor injury has been sustained so far at the scene of the fire where properties worth a fortune have been lost to the inferno,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

The government aren't doing much to safeguard lives and properties from fire outbreaks

Most shops don't have extinguishers or even fire buckets.

Instead of local government touts going about and extorting shop owners, they could channel that energy to ensure stores have these basic equipments .

Some of these fire outbreaks would have been stopped in its early stage, but because there was nothing to fight it, it becomes a disaster

So are you saying the government at LGA and state level should buy fire buckets and fire extingushers for the shops??

Their budgets would be dry within minutes, plus what stops it for being a route for corrupt behaviour..?

If shopkeepers and shop owners cannot take basic fire safety precautions, or buy appropriate insurance, then they have no business running a shop.

Simple.,...most shopkeeprs, and markets don't have fire prevention efforts in place.

This is something that can be done easily....you don't have to wait for government before buying an extingusher, or even buy bucket, and fill am with sand.??

Plus, loose wires, poorly placed electrical fittings, can be repiared. (And yes, a lot of these 'illegal connections' are sources of fire outbreaks)

A lot of these accidents are our own fault. Government suppose do more, but at the same time, government is not our babysitter. We have rights and also soemthing called duties.

Nigeria's environment is so disorganized, chaotic and crude.

Anytime you have pictures of any disaster, you see disorganized society, poor and wretched citizens trooping to catch a glimpse, poor road networks, poor public power wirings.

Our leaders go abroad and see how towns and cities are planned but will come here and continue to give us rubbish and we the people applaud them.

My sympathy to the victims.
