Good afternoon, everyone! Being part of a large Western-based forum that also specializes in Japanese anime, I have come here as part of a larger group of our users (we call ourselves anons since there are no accounts and we usually have no names there) to get an understanding of Nairaland and our counterparts in a more African-centered context. Ask me what you like, but I also have a few questions to start out:

1) I discovered Fela Kuti from our music board, and I started to really enjoy listening and dancing to old afrobeat and highlife music. Aside from Fela, who are some good artists to research from this era? Has gqom found success in Nigeria the same ways it has in South Africa?

2) I know you guys make a lot of movies, but I’ve also been somewhat acquainted with Cairo’s movie industry. Do the Egyptians compete with you in making movies for African consumers?

3) What are your impressions of the United States? From what I’ve seen and from the Nigerians I’ve met, we know you as hard workers who try to fit in with our society over here when you come. In fact, you are among the most successful immigrant groups in our country statistically, how might you explain this?

Thanks in advance for answering my questions, and as I said, feel free to ask your own!

Oh crap... well, you’re the first one to catch me Mr. Fresky, I’ve gotten my kicks for years from using the latest in the Adobe suite and my extensive technical skills to pose as an American white boy on online forums all over Africa... good job! You’re right, I used photoshop to paste my hand in a random google street maps screenshot from the southeastern US, and I used illustrator to put that handwritten script on a blank sheet of paper. I guess I need to stop while I’m ahead, before a dude like you beats me at my own game...

What do trolls here gain from pretending they are American/British/Armenian/Indian etc?

Interesting, what do they normally discuss? I didn’t know there was an Armenian diaspora in Nigeria. On our international board, we get quite a few Georgians, Turks, and Russians to discuss and joke with each other about the situation in the Caucasus
Re: American From 4chan With Some Questions by meobizy(f): 5:39pm On Nov 29, 2019
We have no Armenian diaspora. We only have Lebanese and Indian. People stumble here from time to time for one reason or the other. Almost everyone has a query or the other for users to enlighten them on. Once they get answers they disappear, never to come again.

Well, I hope we can somewhat change that. Our user base is mostly from Western countries, with significant followings from Slavic countries, Latin American countries, and even Middle Easterners; what we don’t have is a sizable African user base (aside from South Africa and the Maghreb). Unlike the people you’re mentioning, what we are interested in is finding out how your forum functions and see what our two user bases have in common, not just answer a few questions and go. We love memes on 4chan (many of the well known ones in the Western world actually come from us), so we’d also love to see what memes and funny jokes you guys have too, and seeing what I’ve seen here so far and my previous experience with Africans (Eritrean, Malian, northern Nigerian), I think it’ll be quite entertaining for both of us!

2) the Egyptian movie industry doesn’t even come close in competition with Nollywood. Nollywood is the world’s second largest in terms of movie volume produced and third largest in financial revenue. Nollywood’s success comes from the fact that it tells realistic African/black stories which not only Africans but blacks (target audience) all over the world really can relate to. On the other hand, the Egyptians, being mostly an islamic Arab mix, tell a different story which probably Arabs and Muslims mostly (their audience) can relate to. There really isn’t any room for comparison here as both movie industries cater to two different markets.

3) majority of Nigerians who have never been to America before view America as a utopia. A perfect land of potential riches free of any issues nor problems. However Nigerians living here have a different view of it, which isn’t different from the view point of other immigrants.

2) I can’t wait to look into stories which aren’t spun by Western nations about African people.

3) well as you may expect, it’s hardly a utopia. In my opinion, it is dealing with problems that other, “less developed” nations have not had to deal with, such as chronic depression in a large part of the population and a lack of purpose or drive to reproduce

2) You would need to watch Nollywood movies then as the stories are told by Africans themselves.

3) I agree, despite the advancement in life and technology here, people tend to suffer from depression way more than in less developed nations and my number one causative factor is that people in advanced countries are estranged from one another unlike in less developed countries where there is still a great sense of community. Being able to relate with others, share your ups and downs, receive support and cheers etc are little things that keep one going through life. In America, people are so scared of unintentionally offending someone through words or acts that it is 'safer' to stay in your lane than relate with others. Even so-called friendships here are really not deep friendships and tend to be mostly 'surface friendships'. Some people use games and other fun stuff to while away time instead of in the company of others.

4 chan? Isn't that the website of many of these white supremacist mass killers ?

Very, very good question, and a complicated answer:

4chan is an imageboard (somewhat like this one) made up of many separate subboards. There are boards for most hobbies like sports, cooking and the like, video games, math and history, Japanese culture stuff, and porn, drawn or recorded. Since users can post what they like without making accounts and do not have to put their names, it has created a huge community of people saying things they wouldn’t otherwise. In addition, moderators only delete posts if they are off topic, spam, or child pornography, which allows a whole bunch of crazy and off color things to be said. The original users of this site around the late 2000s were mostly into anime, video games, and disrupting websites like habbo hotel for fun. As time passed and its people grew up, many became disillusioned with the increasing censorship online and in real life and in the revision of their countries’ history according to the interests of the global elite; as they were mostly young men, they realized that they were all in similar situations, having their heritages attacked or downplayed by their nations’ intellectuals and global interests, their governments becoming less attentive to their needs and becoming more self-serving, their prospects of marriage destroyed as less families were made, sex was made casual, and it became riskier to marry, their prospects of fulfilling careers destroyed by automation, the implosion of pension and social entitlement systems, and toxic work environments, and in many cases, their governments bringing foreigners in, many times to the seeming detriment of their native countrymen. To escape this, many of them withdrew from society and stayed in their rooms, interacting with each other on 4chan and other forums. Around the mid-2010s, the establishment and the media, aware that more of the general public was online due to smartphones and easier-to-use computers, began to attack their spaces and the video games they liked to play, attacking them while they were in retreat (called gamergate, look it up). This coincided with the European refugee crisis of 2015, where hundreds of thousands of migrants from the Middle East and Africa were accepted in their countries, causing wide upheaval, the permanent demographic reconfiguration of Europe, and the resurgence of the far right in Europe and America, which of course coincided with the events of the late 2010s such as Trumps election. These events gave these people hope that something could change in the perceived decay of their societies, and that they were the generation which could do something to save their nations.

4chan has a large following from white supremacists and white nationalists, brought on in large part by what I just mentioned. There are also black nationalists, communists, Muslims, and many other factions who contest each other’s views unfiltered on /pol/, the political board. They discuss issues with each other, insult each other, make fun of each other, and sympathize with each other. The reach of 4chan into the lives of young people here is so strong and threatening to the status quo that Western and foreign intelligence agencies, policy think tanks, and political opponents invest time and money into monitoring our posts and post disinformation anonymously on 4chan to see how the unmoderated mob will react to events and demoralization tactics (we call them shills); in fact, many of us believe the only reason 4chan is still even online is because governments want to keep all the dissidents in one place and that its a Petri dish for monitoring potential threats. Sometimes, 4chan users do things in real life which are coordinated from the board; however, many of the recent shootings were done on 8chan, 4chans sister board, for various reasons. This video may help explain the phenomenon of 4chan further:

why do you write so much? fucking autist.

Another 4chan refugee checking in.
First I have to say, I really do love those rules, especially the "try to use perfect grammar", "dont try to meet up with gays" and "dont post porn".
I acctually come with the intention of creating a permanent thread, which is supposed to be some 8ch revival. Obviously, the rules prohibit some stuff that makes 8ch 8ch, so how strict is the moderation here? Just say, you dont agree with the stuff beings said, whats the matter?
I mean I get that gays should be removed and you dont want another civil war and stuff, but whats the problem with hailing St. Tarrant?
Let me stay negroebros.
I promise I will not try to colonize your women.
I also really hate gays.

You tend to write a lengthy introduction when most people on this site have no earthly idea what 4chan is, much less why they’re portrayed as malicious figures.

The last Aussie who tried to mention Hitler got his thread deleted (most likely from someone reporting them), so keep that in mind. Since threads don’t get 404’d and have unlimited bumps, I’d probably make a general-style thread here for the rest of the refugees; if you make it, make sure it says “4chan” in the title just in case they need to search for it.
