Festus Keyamo, minister of state for labour and productivity, says there must be penalty for positing false information on social media.

In a series of tweets on Monday, the former human rights activists said activists who oppose the bill seeking to regulate social media should stop blocking people who irritate them on the platforms. He also said they should apologise to those they have blocked.

“Those so-called overnight Social Media ‘activists’ who oppose the Social Media Bill should first stop blocking those who irritate them with insults, unblock all those they have blocked and apologise to them. You can’t be intolerant and ask others to be. Practice what you preach,” he tweeted.

“Some cannot differentiate the Social Media Bill from the Hate Speech Bill. Whilst no reasonable person will support death sentence for hate speech, you can’t come online to say something totally untrue that can put other lives in danger without some kind of penal consequence

“The real agitation should be for Parliament, in line with S.36(12) of the 1999 Constitution, to clearly define the TYPES of false & insensitive posts that would attract penal consequences, so that govt doesn’t abuse it. But to leave everyone to just post ANYTHING is unacceptable.”

Keyamo said no one should be allowed to post false information in the name of free speech.
“Civil suits on Defamation of character only take care of PERSONAL INSULTS. I don’t subscribe to punishment for that. But you cannot come online to deliberately post false stories, in the guise of ‘freedom of speech’, that can set the nation ablaze without some penal consequences,” the minister said("...........See tweets below).

Bills seeking to regulate social media and prescribe capital punishment for hate speech, recently introduced in the senate have caused debate among Nigerians. Many say it is an attempt to gag the media and stifle free speech.

If 'hate speech' bill were to be in effect more than a decade ago, you will still be languishing in prison or dead by now.

Jealousy they say is the last class a person attends before becoming a witchcraft member. Same way the suppression of media is the last class a government attends before it becomes a Gestapo government that will oppress, arrest and murder its citizens for speaking up against bad governance. Buhari APC government should continue violating the civil rights of the masses, by 2023 elections they will know how far. No amount of rigging can save you from losing.

This current government lies regularly on social media, yet they want to jail people for false information. They should start by jailing themselves, beginning from the man that said he will make N1 to $1, but about 5 years after, $1 is still N365. I just want to know, who will be the one that determines which info is false or not, is it the same government that keeps saying Boko Haram is technically defeated, yet they keep killing plenty of our gallant soldiers and the same lying government keeps denying and covering it up. Mtshewwwww

See some people’s human rights crusader o, he should remove the log in that scarecrow Lauretta Onochie who blocked me for politely pointing out her outrageous lies or even that bag of cow dung Tolu Ogunlesi. If hate speech or social media bill was passed as at 2010/2011, most of these crètins would have been chilling in choice prisons by now including Muhammadu Buhari who’s utterances caused the massacres of Youth Corp members in Northern Nigeria 2011, my friend barely escaped then because he secretly understood the Hausa language. Wicked devils including that Adamawa witch and her daughter Zahra cool

cool

i fully support this,

only Ipobians are scared with their fabricated NEWS

Imagine Nairaland without Moderators and banning, some Dunce would fill here with pornography, curse and all sort of crude animal behaviours

If the laws regulating the abuse of social are passed it is the judiciary that would convict you and you can argue your case if you think any of your rights are being violated....

As a lawyer I'm disappointed ...how can you verify what's true n what's not ...

Its about perception ...I said buhari is dead because I perceive it to be true ...that's my truth ... Its your duty to verify my truth then believe or not

I'm not responsible for what u see nor believe .....after all I post in my private wall and force no one to see it

Chai! And there is no punishment for corruption, rigging, abuse of office, liars who promise & failed in govt? What defines false/info or hate speech? This man is just talking shitcrap.

Meaning that Lai Mohammed, Lauretta Onochie, Himself etc all ought to have been killed as they were the proponents of fake news/hate speech in 2014.

Has Keyamo forgotten that the govt he is fronting for is worst culprit in this regard than anyone? A govt that is totally intolerant of opposition hence hijacked every arm of government & muscled all opposition elements?

Only an in serious person will take Keyamo seriously a man famous for twisting facts who came to the limelight on the back of a dubious case to protect overlords who didn't want to see themselves disgraced.

Loser Lawyer.

There is nothing anybody can tell me, our freedom must not be caged, even tho I know some people in that region, who just talk without thinking are part of those who abuse social media rampantly.
