There must even be stiffer penalty for corrupt politicians and officials. Why are our leaders not concerned about that? If falsehood must be punished then the punishment must be applied retroactively. All those that have give false news/information in the past must be punished too

I don't know the kind of people advising these Senators and even the Presidency, but with the fall of our judicial system, social media has become a bastion of succour to the common man, a platform where everyone can freely air their grievances and discuss critical issues, thereby garnering enough attention to force the government into action.

Now, when the government comes out to say they want to "regulate" social media, naturally, most people will resist it. It is an unnecessary bill, if we want to talk about punishment against fake news and such, then it should be captured within the hate speech bill. No need for a blanket regulation of the social media space.

Keyamo's analogy of activists unblocking their critics lacks intellectual substance, because it is totally unrelated to the issue at hand.

Government should instead focus on finding ways to get the social media companies(Nairaland, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc) to work out a way to filter unscrupulous contents. The social media companies should be the ones doing the regulation, not the government. It is not everything that the Nigerian government will always be using force and punishments for.

Re: Keyamo: There Must Be Penalty For Posting False Information On Social Media by Nobody: 3:47pm On Dec 02, 2019
Don't know this guy, but I absolutely agree.
People should be held extremely accountable in "cyber-space", for using racist, ethnically-prejudiced, sexist, ageist, religious hate speech, tribal prejudiced, false accusations, slander etc.,
People type what they type simply because there are "0" repercussions.
Slander/defamation is such an extremely destructive almost irreparable thing.

If 'hate speech' were to be in effect more than a decade ago, you will still be languishing in prison.
Why will we all be in prison? did you post any false or misleading information that led to the death of anyone?

Don't know about you, but I for one will not be in prison cos I dont go about irresponsibly spreading deadly falsehoods which can cost lives.

I'm telling you!

You can't just wake up to write one fake story to damage a person just because you know how to write.
What then should the durm do?

You can't just do none sense just because you're in a position of influence.
We all do have positions.

That's why you see the behavior of some people in offices and begin to wonder what's wrong with us as humans. Because they always believe they have advantages over others.

Things like these should not be accepted as a Nation.

Jealousy they say is the last class a person attends before becoming a witchcraft member. Same way the suppression of media is the last class a government attends before it becomes a Gestapo government that will oppress, arrest and murder its citizens for speaking up against bad governance. Buhari APC government should continue violating the civil rights of the masses, by 2023 elections they will know how far. No amount of rigging can save you from losing.

Post false story and go to prison. Ode

This exactly what he is saying,You may not be responsible for what people see or believe about your post, But you should be responsible for what ever negative reaction that your post lead others into or when it causes others to behave in a way that is harmful to the society.
