The World Bank in its 2019 Nigeria Economic Update Report, warned the present administration that the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty may increase by more than 30 million by 2030.

The Bank warned that Nigeria will be home to 25 percent of the world’s destitute people if the government fails to revive economic growth and create jobs.

The World Bank urged President Muhammadu Buhari to increase domestic revenue, remove trade restrictions and improve the predictability of economic policy. It also advised the Nigerian government to remove expensive fuel subsidies, adding that failure to take actions would see more Nigerians falling into extreme poverty.

It stressed that Nigeria could slide back into recession if crude prices fell by 25 percent to $50 a barrel.

The report read: “Economic and demographic projections highlight the urgent need for reform. With population growth (estimated at 2. 6 percent) outpacing economic growth in a context of weak job creation, per capita income is falling. Today, an estimated 100 million Nigerians live on less than $1. 90 per day.

“Close to 80 percent of poor households are in northern Nigeria, while employment creation and income gains have been concentrated on central and southern Nigeria.

“Nigeria’s economy is expected to grow by 2. 1 percent in 2020 and 2021, compared to an annual population growth rate of 2. 6 percent. Nigeria’ s economy is recovering gradually from the 2016 recession, with growth projected to pick up from 1. 9 percent in 2018 to two percent in 2019

“But the projected growth outlook is vulnerable to external and domestic risks, including geopolitical and trade tensions that may affect inflows of private investment.

“Nigeria has the opportunity to advance reforms to mitigate these risks amid growing public demand for greater economic opportunities.

“President Muhammadu Buhari should increase domestic revenue, remove trade restrictions and improve the predictability of economic policy.

“Nigerian government should remove expensive fuel subsidies and reduce lending to targeted sectors that crowd out banks. Failure to take action would see more Nigerians falling into extreme poverty.

“The cost of inaction is significant. Under a business -as- usual scenario, where Nigeria maintains the current pace of growth and employment levels, by 2030, the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty could increase by more than 30 million,” the Bank warned.

Meanwhile, they are the same lots whose leaders have ruled this nation for a greater part of our national life but have only bequeathed nepotism, abject poverty, stark illiteracy, religious fanatism, ethnic supremacist, poor socioeconomic status, child bride/early marriage + attendant health complications etc to us.

2023 is still far away, but they're still threatening to continue the old order as all they know is power, power, power to the core north with no iota of the responsibility thereof.Nigeria must go with true federalism by choice or force in order to make progress.

When people say north is united, they love themselves, I always laugh cheesy
How many presidents, juicy oil block owners, Abuja was created for them, all govt agencies and ministries, they are there, richest men in Nigeria, military and paramilitary they are always heading yet......

The truth is that riches in the north is recycled among the elites. A Yoruba or igbo rich man will feel comfortable marrying a poor lady or vise versa but it will never happen in the north. Those in the south are ready to show their brothers the way to the top.
Marriage is by class dictated by family not love. And they are so self centred they hardly help the poor among them. If u ever see a northerners helping the poor, it's simply because of what he will use that poor man to get in the future. They also use some parts of their holy book to cage the downtrodden among them through their imams.

Very wicked set of people.
Have u noticed that sharia is only for the poor?
They are even more morally corrupt than the south. Forget long gowns and covering faces.

If south was ruling they would say we marginalized them

North has benefited from nigeria more than south east ...yet IMO state GDP is close to that of the whole north east

How can we progress when north control nigeria .....federal road safety and navy are the only southern dominated force and you can see the difference

Remove north all southern indices would double without nothing ooh ...just removing north
