the British did not hand power to the North, the system of parliarment left behind by the British ensured that every region controlled it's resources and parliarment needed the 2 of the 3 regions to make any constitutional changes to our political structure. If anything it's the North that were afraid of being part of Nigeria,where the more educated southerners would dominate them. Thets why independence was delayed by 3 years.

The Igbo coup of 1966 and the civil war is what inadvertently handed power to the North. The coup brought in the military and the military changed the political and fiscal structure of the country by fiat to prevent the igbos or anyone thinking of seceeding staging another coup/secession. Ojukwu seceeded because they created states and removed the Oil producing areas from under his control. They created states to remove Oil from Ojukwu's control. When this happened and fearing he would lose his power and money that comes from the newly created rivers and cross rovers states, if he allowed the new governors to assume power he hurriedly announced an ill prepared secesssion jusr 3 days after the announcement of the creation of new states.

Bottom line our problems started when some people staged a coup in 1966. before then regions were very powerful and North had very limited power over what happened in the south. if you are looking for the genesis of our problems look east not the British!
